現代語訳
その後も幸介はどこへ出ても、通りの者はもちろん女という名前のついたほどの者は皆、目配せしたり袖を引いたりして、みんな俺に惚れたのかと思うところへ、この広い江戸中の女に惚れられて、ひょっと一人の女に良い返事をして愛を叶えたならば、四方八方から恨みが降りかかってくるだろう。どれもどれも少し靡いてみてはいるが、まあ体が持たないから、さりとは罪だが、ここを堪えてまず養生食いをして、一として大丈夫となって、世間の女の百分の一でも叶えてやろうと思い、また改めて精のつくものを好むようになった。

After that, wherever Kōsuke went, not only the people on the street but all women worthy of the name would give him meaningful glances and tug at his sleeves, making him think they had all fallen for him. But if he were to give a favorable response to just one woman among all the women of this vast Edo and fulfill that love, resentment would rain down on him from all directions. Although each woman showed signs of being swayed by him, he thought that his body wouldn't be able to handle it all. "What a sinful situation this is," he mused, "but I must endure this and first eat nourishing food to build up my strength so that I can satisfy at least one percent of all the women in society." With this resolve, he once again began to favor foods that would boost his vitality.
