現代語訳
幸介は願いが効くと、それはよしと思い、馬道辺りを通りかかると、ある格子造りの家の内より下女と見えて、とてもきれいな女が、渋団扇で茄子のへたや中子を載せた塵を外に出している。これも俺に惚れて、わざと塵を捨てに出たと心得て、憎らしいと思い、抱きついてしまおうとしたところ、女は肝を潰して振り切って逃げてしまった。
それより幸介は少し、あそこここの女に声をかけて見ても、所々で散らされるので、長屋の大家の嚙もどうついているようすなので、これは上等にできるとにやみをいたして、根岸の辺りの何々様も半分古びていて、少し怪しいところがあるが、本当のことになりそうな案配なので、外してしまって禁女に出る。

はて、そのはずではないに。ああ思えた。昨日地蔵所へ願をかけたから惚れぬと見える。
光る源氏ならば「内侍のかみ、宰相の君よ、唸れ」という所だが、この業平は歌を詠む風ではないので、鼻歌で文句を食える。
「幸介さん、お前いい処へ来なさった。家の内、留守居して下さりませ。」
「こいつもいけぬわい。はて、地蔵所の願があんまり効きすぎて、一つもできぬ。」
英語訳
Kōsuke thought his prayer would work, and thinking this was good, as he was passing through the Umamichi area, from inside a latticed house, what appeared to be a maid - a very pretty woman - was using a paper fan to sweep out trash with eggplant stems and seeds onto the street. Thinking "She too has fallen for me and deliberately came out to throw away trash," he found her detestable and tried to embrace her, but the woman was startled and shook him off and ran away.
From then on, when Kōsuke tried calling out to women here and there, he was rebuffed everywhere. Since even the landlord's wife of the tenement seemed to be giving him the cold shoulder, he thought "This should work well" and grinned. The lady of such-and-such near Negishi was also half-worn and a bit suspicious, but since the situation seemed like it might become real, he gave up and went to visit a courtesan.

Strange, that shouldn't be the case. Ah, I understand! Yesterday I made a vow at the Jizō temple, so they don't fall for me anymore.
If this were the Shining Genji, this would be the part where he'd say "Naishi no kami, Saisho no kimi, moan for me," but this Narihira isn't the type to compose poetry, so he can complain through humming.
"Kōsuke-san, you've come at a good time. Please watch the house while I'm away."
"This won't work either. Damn, the Jizō's blessing worked too well - I can't get anywhere with anyone."
