幸介はつくづく考えてみると、どうやら俺は男が良すぎるために、女どもが力んで（緊張して）しまい、一つも相談（交渉）ができないと見えた。いっそのこと地女（一般の女性）は諦めて、女郎を買おうと思いついた。吉原にて有名な女郎をあちこちで買ってみるが、とかく思うように先方から惚れたようすには見えず、すねんとしてさほど面白みはなく、いろいろと気を揉む。

これはこれは、昔の色男というものは変わった物だよ。宵の口からでも、うち（遊郭内）の女郎が入れ替わり立ち替わり覗いて愛想を言い、そして相手の女郎もあんまり惚れたようではないから、このように結構よりは金用（金目当て）にする。それも道理だ。他の女郎たちにもからかわれるのが切ないから、早く帰宅しても、それでは「のぼせた」とか何とか言うようだからよ。

Kōsuke thought deeply about it and realized that apparently because he was too handsome as a man, the women became tense and he couldn't make any progress with any of them. He decided he might as well give up on ordinary women and buy the services of courtesans instead. He visited famous courtesans here and there in Yoshiwara, but somehow they didn't seem to fall for him as he hoped, appearing sullen with little charm, which troubled him greatly.

Well, well, the playboys of old were strange creatures indeed. Even from early evening, the courtesans in the quarter would take turns peering out and making pleasant conversation, but since his partner courtesans didn't seem particularly smitten either, rather than being truly interested, they were just doing it for money. That's understandable too - since it would be painful to be mocked by the other courtesans, even if they wanted to go home early, that would make them look "love-struck" or something similar.
