幸介はその後も所々で遊んだが、どこでも面白おかしくもされず、熱からさえない事ゆえ、きっと場所を変えて遊ぼうと品川に出かけ、ある家でお菊という廻り女郎を揚げた。この女は実によくよくの無粋者と見えて、とんだ欲深い者ゆえ、初めて女はこうした物だという事を知り、さあなかなか本当にめったに夢中に通ったゆえ、親方徳右衛門

Kōsuke continued to visit pleasure quarters here and there after that, but nowhere was he entertained in an amusing or delightful manner, and since things remained lukewarm, he decided to definitely change locations and went to Shinagawa, where he called for a traveling courtesan named Okiku at a certain house. This woman appeared to be utterly tasteless and turned out to be terribly greedy, so for the first time he learned what women were really like. Well, he became so truly and rarely infatuated that he frequented her constantly, until the money he had stolen from his master Tokuemon's place

As his situation gradually deteriorated to this level of social standing, he progressively destroyed his clothing and other possessions, and these days he has become a pitiful figure who pawns others' belongings to buy courtesans.
