人の身の成り行きは皮肉なもので、浮かれ暮らしを送り、思い入れに王者か文道かをしのぎ心得する心にて、気長にやらずに行くをして、さらばと思った時、思い人が違い行く品川の果てにて、女に思いつかれ面白いと思うと落ちぶれるのは一時にて、今は土手へも身の置き所さえなく、共に一枚を八丈とも島縮緬とも覆い身にまとい乍らも、やっぱり自惚れは止まず。昔の藤屋伊左衛門は夕霧という女に金銀を遣い捨て、紙子一つとなって悪名を残し、「望みこの上を行って我は薦を被る」というも、伊左衛門よりは上をする。「俺は伊左衛門より色男なるを」こればっかりが本当だと諦めとなり、その人に一銭二銭をもらい日を送りけり。
また徳右衛門の方は[判読不明]となし、家を譲り、夫婦は隠居して今は徳兵衛の身上となり、浅草寺観世音参りの帰りに、以前の朋輩幸介に巡り合い、まず世話してやろうと連れて行ったのであった。

The course of human destiny is indeed ironic. Living a dissolute life, with a heart that understands competing in either royal pursuits or literary arts with passionate devotion, not proceeding patiently but hastily, when he thought "farewell," his beloved went astray. At the outskirts of Shinagawa, being captivated by a woman and thinking it amusing, his downfall came all at once. Now he has no place to rest even on the embankment, and though he and she cover themselves with a single piece of cloth, whether it be hachijō silk or island crepe, his vanity still does not cease. In the past, Fujiya Izaemon spent all his gold and silver on a woman named Yūgiri, was reduced to owning just a paper kimono, and left behind a bad reputation, saying "pursuing my desires beyond this point, I shall wear a straw mat," yet claiming to surpass Izaemon. "I am more of a ladies' man than Izaemon" - this alone became his consolation as resignation, and he spent his days receiving one or two sen from people.
Meanwhile, Tokuemon's household [text unclear], transferred the house, the couple retired, and it became Tokubei's estate. On the way back from worshipping at Sensoji Temple's Kanzeon, he encountered his former colleague Kōsuke and took him along, intending to help him.
