現代語訳
それに引き換え徳吉は、朝から晩まで家に百度参りをして用事を確かめ、髪も普段煤を掃くようにして、耳も襟も真っ黒になって歩き回っている。
近所の子どもが五六人、無患子を持って吹き虫をしたり、あるいは蹴鞠をして遊んでいるのをつくづく見て面白くなり、「どうぞ俺もしてみたい」と思えども、無患子もない。
二三日も心がけて通りの店先で無患子を探し、商売を始める。幸運にも一つの無患子が六つ七つになり、余った分は大切に布の腰上げの中へ押し込み、寝る時も押さえて寝るほど大事にして、また二つ増え三つ増えて、後には二三十にもなった。これより悪いことに賭け事に心が移るものである。
徳吉はおよそ元手一つにも精を出して一つを大切にして稼げば利益することに心がけ、明け暮れ親方の帳面を算用するそばで、いくつも利方ということを面白く思い、後には徳右衛門［の後継ぎは］この徳吉であるべしと思われるようになった。

In contrast to this, Tokukichi would make a hundred visits inside the house from morning to evening to confirm tasks, and would walk around with his hair as if he had been sweeping soot regularly, his ears and collar completely black.
Watching five or six neighborhood children playing with soap nuts, blowing bubbles, or playing kemari (kickball), he found it fascinating and thought "I would love to try that too," but he had no soap nuts.
For two or three days he kept an eye out, searching for soap nuts at storefronts along the street, and began trading. Fortunately, one soap nut became six or seven, and he carefully tucked the extras into his cloth waist-tuck, treasuring them so much that he would sleep while pressing them down. Eventually they increased by two, then three, and later became twenty or thirty. From this point, unfortunately, his heart turned to gambling.
Tokukichi applied himself earnestly even with just one unit of capital, taking care of each one, and if he worked hard he would profit. He devoted himself to this mindset, and while calculating his master's account books day and night, he found the concept of "profit-making methods" fascinating. Eventually, it came to be thought that this Tokukichi should be [the successor to] Tokuzaemon.
