幸介は何でも一つとして自分の気に入らなければならない。習うなら親方も徳兵衛も叩き出してしまいたいと思ったけれども、その甲斐はない。所詮欠け落ちして（店を逃げ出して）腹いっぱいに金々と色男に身なりを整え、遊女に気を揉ませて楽しもうと、金子百両を盗み出し、首にかけて、随徳寺と（ずいっと後をくらます意味で）出かけた。

徳右衛門の家内では、いつものように朝起きたところ、金箱の引き出しに置いてあった百両の金が見えず、鍵は箱のそばに捨ててある。しかし幸介が駆け落ちしたので、他への疑いもかからず、家内一同肝を潰した。
「あいつめ、こうであろうと思った。憎い奴だ。親方の罰がどこに当たるものか」

Kōsuke had to have everything exactly to his liking. If he were to learn properly, he would have wanted to drive out both his master and Tokubei, but that was pointless. Eventually deciding to abscond from the shop, he planned to dress himself up as a dandy with plenty of money and have courtesans fawn over him for his amusement. So he stole one hundred ryō in gold, hung it around his neck, and set off for "Zuitokuji" (a play on words meaning to slip away quickly).

In Tokuemon's household, when they got up in the morning as usual, the hundred ryō that had been kept in the drawer of the money box was nowhere to be seen, and the key was left discarded beside the box. Since Kōsuke had eloped, no suspicion fell on anyone else, but everyone in the household was shocked.
"That bastard—I thought he might do something like this. What a detestable fellow. Where will the master's punishment fall?"
