盗賊要蔵召捕詮義仕候得者右勝弥着類盗取佐古町
五丁目矢辺孝左衛門質居ニ指置御坐候旨白状仕与三郎ゟ利銀ヲ
加へ孝左衛門手元ゟ受引仕候趣不案内之百姓共詮義ニ罷越候而者
万事行届不申畢竟盗賊召捕不申候而ハ置質相分不申
百姓共迷惑仕非人共ニおゐて者常々預助情眷属相育
居申候而右様之節取調不申候而者役前も相立不申重々迷惑
奉仕候ニ付幾重ニも御慈悲を以前々之通ニ被仰付被為下候得者

佐古町から夫々市中質屋に掛け合ったところ、右品書に引き合う質物はない旨で、やむを得ず帰ってきたところ、井戸村番非人平五郎が右村に出向き、盗賊要蔵を召し捕って詮議したところ、右勝弥の着類を盗み取って佐古町五丁目矢辺孝左衛門の質屋に質入れしてある旨白状し、与三郎から利銀を加えて孝左衛門の手元から受け戻しました。事情を知らない百姓どもが詮議に出向いても万事行き届かず、結局盗賊を召し捕らなければ質入れ品も分からず、百姓どもは迷惑し、非人どもにおいては常々預かった助情で眷属を養っているのに、そのような節に取り調べをしなければ役目も立たず、重々迷惑いたしますので、幾重にも御慈悲をもって前々の通りに仰せ付けくださいますなら、冥加至極有り難く存じます旨、別紙の通り追って書面を私どもの手元に差し出しました。御繁多の御役場へ再び申すべきことも恐れ入りますが、実に郷分一牧に迷惑ともなることゆえ、恐れながら書面を相添えて差し上げます。御憐愍をもって早々御相談を仰せ付けくださいますよう存じます。以上

When they inquired with various city pawnshops in Sako-machi, they were told that there were no pawned items matching the written description, so they had no choice but to return. However, Heigoro, a ban-hinin from Ido village, went to that village and apprehended the thief Yozo for interrogation. Upon questioning, the thief confessed that he had stolen Katsumi's clothing and pawned it at Yabe Kozaemon's pawnshop in the 5th district of Sako-machi. Yosaburo then paid the interest and redeemed the items from Kozaemon. When uninformed peasants go out for investigations, nothing is properly accomplished. Ultimately, unless thieves are apprehended, pawned items cannot be identified, causing hardship to the peasants. As for the non-persons, they normally support their families with the assistance they receive, but if they cannot conduct investigations at such times, they cannot fulfill their duties, causing great distress. Therefore, if you would mercifully order this to continue as before, we would be extremely grateful for this blessing. They have subsequently submitted a written statement to us as shown in the attached document. Although we are reluctant to make repeated appeals to your busy office, this truly causes hardship throughout our rural district, so we humbly submit this document along with our petition.
