此ほりの土にてやしきなにほとたかく

まず120間からほりの幅5間を引くと115間ある。これに4をかければ460間になる。これに5間をかければ2,300（二三〇〇）になる。これに深さ3間をかければ6,900坪になる。これを右（別）に置いておき、また左に120間として、堀の幅5間ずつ両側から引けば110間になる。これを左右（縦横）に置いてかければ12,100坪ある。これで右の6,900坪を割れば「五七下二」（0.5702…）となる。これに6尺5寸をかければ3尺7寸6厘3毛、撞き上げてよしという。

First, subtract the moat width of 5 ken from 120 ken to get 115 ken. Multiply this by 4 to get 460 ken (the perimeter, measured at the outer edge of the moat minus one width). Multiply this by 5 ken (the moat width) to get 2,300. Multiply this by the depth of 3 ken to get 6,900 tsubo (the volume of earth excavated). Set this aside on the right. Next, on the left, take 120 ken and subtract 5 ken of moat width from both sides to get 110 ken (the inner estate dimension). Multiply this by itself (left × right, i.e., 110 × 110) to get 12,100 tsubo (the area of the inner estate). Divide the aforementioned 6,900 tsubo by this to get "5702..." (approximately 0.5702). Multiply this by 6 shaku 5 sun to obtain 3 shaku 7 sun 6 rin 3 mo. This is the height to which the earth is piled up.
