《題：葺き板（ふきいた）の積もり》
厚さ八寸・幅一尺二寸・長さ七尺の木材を、こけら（柿）葺き板に割いて作ると、一丁（ひとまとまり）でいったい何枚になるかという問題の場合、
答えて言う：一丁につき千九百二十枚になる。
〔解法〕板の幅は三寸に、厚さ一寸を十二枚ずつに割き、一丁を（長さの方向に）五つずつ切る。

【右上にこけら葺き屋根の図。棟（むね）の上に横向きに：「棟（むね）八間」。屋根の斜面に：「四間」。軒下に横向きに：「軒（のき）八間」。】
この屋根の坪数は両面合わせて六十四坪ある。
これをこけら葺きにするとき、葺き板は何枚必要かという問題において、軒では一寸あし（重なりが一寸）、中央では一寸五分あし、棟では二寸あし、三箇所を平均すると一寸五分あし（重なり）となる。
板の幅が三寸ある板で、板の枚数はいくら必要かというと、
《板数》六万零八十八枚八分という。

《Title: Estimating the Number of Roofing Shingles (Fukiita no Tsumori)》
Given a piece of timber 8 sun thick, 1 shaku 2 sun wide, and 7 shaku long, if it is split into kokerabuki (cypress shingle) roofing boards, the question is: how many shingles can be made from one piece (one tō)?
Answer: One piece (tō) yields 1,920 shingles.
〔Method〕 The width of each shingle is 3 sun; from a thickness of 1 sun, 12 shingles are split; and one piece is cut into 5 sections lengthwise.
〔Verification: 4 [widths from 1 shaku 2 sun] × 12 [shingles per sun of thickness] × 5 [length sections] × 8 [sun of thickness] = 1,920 shingles〕

When covering this roof with kokerabuki shingles, the question is: how many shingles are needed? The shingles overlap as follows: at the eaves, 1 sun overlap; at the center, 1 sun 5 bu overlap; at the ridge, 2 sun overlap. Averaging the three positions, the overlap is 1 sun 5 bu.
Using boards that are 3 sun wide, the question is how many boards are needed:
