右の米は日本の。物成のふんは。さておきて
。大唐四百余州の。物成にても。たる事は

▲右の米は、どれほどの四方の広さになるかと問う。
答えて曰く、九十五里二十一町二十八間五尺二寸八分（四方）
高さも同じである。
この米は、日本の収穫高はおくとして、大唐（中国）四百余州の収穫高をもってしても、到底足りることはない。
▲ある米屋の門前に、米がこぼれて馬糞に混じって捨てられているのを見て、ある人が米屋に言うには、「この捨てられている米粒を、一日目に一粒拾い、二日目に二粒拾い、日ごとに前日の倍ずつ増やして、三十日の間に拾い取ることにしたいのですが、

もし門前にこぼれた米だけでは足りない場合には、蔵の米を足していただけますか」と申したところ、米屋は「やすいこと（造作もないこと）だ」と引き受けた。しかし、一日目から三十日目まで拾い集めた米の合計を見てみると、
合計 百七十八石九斗五升七合
米屋もこれを見て、あっけにとられてしまった（驚いて後悔した）。
英語訳

▲ The question is: if the rice [from the previous problem] were spread out, how large a square area would it cover?
Answer: 95 ri, 21 chō, 28 ken, 5 shaku, 2 sun, 8 bu on each side.
The height would be the same as well.
This amount of rice would exceed not only the entire harvest of Japan, but even the combined harvest of all four hundred-plus provinces of Great Tang (China) would not be sufficient to match it.
▲ In front of a certain rice merchant's shop, grains of rice were being spilled and mixed with horse dung, going to waste. A certain person said to the rice merchant: "I would like to pick up these wasted grains of rice — one grain on the first day, two grains on the second day, doubling each day — and collect them over the course of thirty days.

If the spilled rice at your gate should prove insufficient, would you make up the difference from your storehouse?" The rice merchant, thinking nothing of it, readily agreed. However, when the total amount of rice collected from the first day through the thirtieth day was tallied up, it came to:

Upon seeing this, the rice merchant was left utterly dumbfounded [and filled with regret].
