**[Volume 3, Folio 35, Verso]**
**Method:** Multiplying the Middle Village's *taka* of 170 *koku* by 2 *bu* gives 3 *koku* 4 *to*. Then multiplying the Lower Village's *taka* of 130 *koku* by double the 2 *bu* (i.e., 4 *bu*) gives 5 *koku* 2 *to*. Combining these two amounts gives 8 *koku* 6 *to*, which is added to 410 *koku* to give 418 *koku* 6 *to*. Dividing this by the total *taka* of 500 *koku* gives the Upper Village's productivity rate of 8 *tsu* 3 *bu* 7 *rin* 2 *mō*. The Middle Village's rate is reduced by 2 *bu* from this, and the Lower Village's rate is reduced by 2 *bu* from the Middle.
- Upper Village rate: 8 *tsu* 3 *bu* 7 *rin* 2 *mō*
- Middle Village rate: 8 *tsu* 1 *bu* 7 *rin* 2 *mō* (2 *bu* below Upper Village)
- Lower Village rate: 7 *tsu* 9 *bu* 7 *rin* 2 *mō* (2 *bu* below Middle Village)
Multiplying each village's respective rate by its *taka* gives the *mononari* (actual yield/tax levy) for each.

**《Problem Title: The Carpenter's Allotment》**
▲ There are 540 senior carpenters (*jō daiku*), 1,100 middling carpenters (*chū daiku*), and 860 junior carpenters (*ge daiku*) — 2,500 workers in all — and 100 *koku* of rice is to be distributed among them. The middle grade receives 7 *gō* less per person than the upper grade, and the lower grade receives 8 *gō* less per person than the middle grade. When distributing the 100 *koku* of rice in this manner, how much does each senior carpenter receive?
- Each senior carpenter receives: 4 *shō* 8 *gō* 2 *shaku* 4 *sai*
- Each middle carpenter receives: 4 *shō* 1 *gō* 2 *shaku* 4 *sai* (7 *gō* less than upper)
- Each lower carpenter receives: 3 *shō* 3 *gō* 2 *shaku* 4 *sai* (8 *gō* less than middle)
Total for 540 senior carpenters: 26 *koku* 4 *shō* 9 *gō* 6 *shaku*
Total for 1,100 middle carpenters: 45 *koku* 3 *to* 6 *shō* 4 *gō*
