860 junior carpenters: 28 *koku* 5 *to* 8 *shō* 6 *gō* 4 *shaku*
**[Method]** Multiplying 1,100 middle carpenters by 7 *gō* gives 7 *koku* 7 *to*. Adding 7 *gō* and 8 *gō* together gives 1 *shō* 5 *gō*. Multiplying this by 860 junior carpenters gives 12 *koku* 9 *to*. Adding 7 *koku* 7 *to* to this gives 20 *koku* 6 *to*. Adding 100 *koku* to this gives 120 *koku* 6 *to*. Dividing this by 2,500 workers shows that each senior carpenter receives 4 *shō* 8 *gō* 2 *shaku* 4 *sai*.
To find the total share of the 540 senior carpenters, multiply the above 120 *koku* 6 *to* by 540, then divide by 2,500 to obtain the senior carpenters' total.

**[Section: The Bridge Apportionment (*Hashi no Wari*)]**
▲ Two bridges together cost 21 *kanme* of silver. Of this, 7 *kanme* is borne equally by the entire town district. The 4 *chō* between the two bridges contribute in equal shares; beyond each bridge, the contribution decreases by 1 *monme* of silver per *chō* further out. When there are 7 *chō* on one side and 3 *chō* on the other side beyond the bridges, the *chōgashira* (the town nearest to the bridge) each contribute 604 *monme* 4 *bu* 3 *rin*.
The progression for the 7-*chō* side is: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7; and for the 3-*chō* side: 1, 2, 3. The sum of all these is 34. Multiplying this by 43 *monme* gives 1 *kanme* 462 *monme*. Adding 7 *kanme* to this gives 8 *kanme* 462 *monme*. Dividing by the total number of towns — 14 *chō* — gives the *chōgashira*'s share of 604 *monme* 4 *bu* 3 *rin*. From this, 43 *monme* is subtracted in turn for each town further from the bridge.
