私のところで、五月二十一日の夜に女の捨て子がございまして、翌二十二日にお届けを済ませ、養育しておりましたが、乳が出ず難儀しておりましたところ、幸い松島宿の親類・長蔵方に乳のある者がおりましたので、預かり一札を受け取り、しばらくの間、右の同人のもとへ預けて養育いたしたく存じます。これにより願い上げ奉ります。
右の趣、御慈悲をもって願い上げ奉ります通りにお聞き届けくださいますれば、ありがたい仕合わせと存じます。以上。

Respectfully, a petition submitted in the form of a verbal statement
On the night of the twenty-first day of the Fifth Month, an abandoned baby girl was found at my residence. On the following twenty-second day, I duly reported the matter to the authorities and have been caring for the child. However, as I have no milk [to nurse the infant], I have been in great difficulty. Fortunately, a relative named Chōzō, residing in Matsushima-juku, has a nursing woman available. I therefore wish to obtain a written acknowledgment of custody and temporarily entrust the child to said Chōzō for care and upbringing. I hereby humbly petition for permission to do so.
