次郎左衛門不一方慈愛仕候追々年立候ニ付相応之元手金
相渡一昨冬中町え別家相仕罷在候所去月十三日妻子
召連出奔仕候然ル所養父義は年来病気罷在別而
其砌重病ニ相成候所吉兵義幼年ゟ之大恩を忘却
仕右養父大病を見捨家出仕候段重々不埒ニ付早速諸方え
追人差出鑿穿仕候得共行衛不相知候処盆後ニ相成塩尻
宿扇屋周蔵後家方ニ罷在候趣承候且出奔後追々取調候所
甚以不埒之所業も有之其上不筋之借財等多分有之私は
勿論親類共迄驚入候ニ付親類共両三人塩尻宿へ罷越早速
引戻し改心為致度精々理解申聞候得共強情申張且ハ扇屋
周蔵後家と如何申合ニ御座候哉荷物等預置倶ニ不法之義

等有之候而私共掛合ニ而は談方行届不申甚以迷惑仕候ニ付

次郎左衛門は並々ならぬ慈愛を注いできました。年月が経つにつれて相応の元手資金を渡し、一昨年の冬に中町へ分家させて住まわせておりました。ところが先月十三日に妻子を連れて逃亡いたしました。その時、養父は長年病気を患っており、特にその折には重病となっておりました。吉兵衛は幼い頃からの大恩を忘れ、養父の大病を見捨てて家出をした次第で、まことに不埒な行為であります。早速あちこちに人を出して探索いたしましたが行方が分からず、お盆過ぎになって塩尻宿の扇屋周蔵後家方にいるとの話を聞きました。また、出奔後にだんだん調べてみますと、甚だ不埒な行為もあり、その上筋違いの借金なども多額にあって、私はもちろん親類一同まで驚き入っております。そこで親類数人で塩尻宿へ行き、早速連れ戻して改心させようと懸命に説得いたしましたが、頑固に言い張り、また扇屋周蔵後家とどのような約束をしているのか、荷物なども預けて共に不法な

言い分を申し、その上同宿の大和屋宿之助という者もまた後押しをして、道理に外れた雑言などがあり、私どもの交渉では話し合いがうまくいかず、甚だ迷惑しております。恐れ入りますが、前述の両人を呼び出していただき、吉兵衛並びに妻子・荷物などを返していただくよう仰せつけくださいますようお願い申し上げます。その他は口頭で申し上げます。
右の趣旨を御慈悲をもってお願い申し上げる通りに仰せつけくださいますなら、ひとえに御慈悲の筋と有り難く存じます。以上

Jiroizaemon showed extraordinary compassion and care. As the years passed, he provided appropriate capital and established Kichibe as a branch family in Nakamachi in the winter before last. However, on the 13th of last month, Kichibe fled with his wife and children. At that time, his adoptive father had been suffering from illness for years, and was particularly gravely ill at that moment. Kichibe forgot the great debt of gratitude from his childhood and abandoned his adoptive father in his grave illness to run away from home—truly disgraceful conduct. We immediately sent people out in all directions to search for him, but could not determine his whereabouts. After the Bon festival, we heard that he was staying at the house of the widow of Ogiya Shūzō in Shiojiri post station. Furthermore, when we gradually investigated after his flight, we found that he had committed very disgraceful acts, and moreover had substantial improper debts, which shocked not only myself but all our relatives. Therefore, several relatives went to Shiojiri post station to bring him back immediately and reform his ways through earnest persuasion, but he stubbornly insisted on his position. Also, whatever arrangement he had made with the widow of Ogiya Shūzō, he had deposited his belongings there and together they made unlawful

Moreover, a person at the same inn named Yamatoya Yadonosuke also supported him and made unreasonable abusive remarks, so our negotiations could not reach a satisfactory resolution, causing us great distress. Though it is presumptuous, we humbly request that you summon the aforementioned two persons and order them to return Kichibe along with his wife, children, and belongings. Other matters we shall explain orally.
If you would graciously grant our request as stated above with your compassion, we would consider it entirely an act of your benevolence and be most grateful. The above.
