【本文】
狐の御役人が
言い渡すおもむきがあると、大勢宮の
ない手合いを呼び
集め、「この度
吉原の
梅屋というものが
新たに祠を
拵えた。しかも普請も粋にて、季節毎に熱い飯や
豆腐などは山ほど、慣れ親しんだ心持ちで
この白魚のぴちぴちするやつにお神酒も山ほどと
念を入れば、長面に写し、息災延命は
請け合い。しかし向こうに一つ願いがある。素人女が
そのほう達の真似をして一番狂言を
書いたそうだ」と聞けば、皆の者も「そいつを茶化して
遊ぼう」ということ承り、およそ憎いやつとは言うものの、
そうしておいては梅屋の迷惑も早々
返してやれ。しかしながら狐でないと梅屋に
知れぬようにしてやれ。狐でなければ
宮建ての無駄と思い下ろうが、その代わりに
繁昌させてやろう。

【Main text】
The fox official announced his intentions, gathering together many spirits without proper shrines: "This time, an establishment in Yoshiwara called Umeya has newly constructed a shrine. Moreover, the construction is stylish, and every season they offer hot rice, tofu and such in abundance. With their familiar, devoted spirit, they provide this fresh whitebait fish that wriggles about, and plenty of sacred sake too. If we put our hearts into it, we can transfer this to our long faces - good health and long life are guaranteed. However, they have one request: an amateur woman has apparently imitated you all and written a kyōgen play." Hearing this, all the spirits said, "Let's make fun of that person and play around." Though we might call her a detestable creature, if we leave things as they are, Umeya's troubles will quickly return. However, make sure Umeya doesn't realize you're not foxes. If you're not foxes, they'll think building the shrine was pointless, but in exchange, we'll make their business prosper.
