*(Continued from the previous page)* As for letters of genuine importance, they are a separate matter; however, routine duty letters (*kinjo*) of any kind are strictly unnecessary. As for lodging-related letters (*yadojo*), they should be written as concisely as possible, and marked "lodging letter" (*yadojo*) at the top. In cases where there are other various unavoidable matters related to lodging needs, these too should be written as concisely as possible without becoming excessive before being submitted. After all, if letters accumulate and remain undelivered, each person's business will be delayed and will instead become an impediment. Furthermore, it has been heard that some people are relying on personal connections to ask domain officials to act as intermediaries; this matter too, as has been established in prior years, shall henceforth be strictly prohibited — neither requesting intermediary services nor acting as intermediary. Regarding one's own duty letters (*kinjo*) sent for New Year's greetings, midsummer and midwinter greetings, and congratulatory or condolence occasions: as has previously been commanded, these are likewise strictly unnecessary. The above matters were already communicated in prior years, but it appears that they have again recently fallen into disorder; therefore this notification is hereby reissued. 12th month *The above was conveyed on the 16th day of the 12th month at the Edo residence, by means of a written notice from Inagaki Yasuemon.* --- **Item — Hōreki 6th year, Year of the Rat [1756]** ○ This is to inform you by document (*tegata*): As the accumulation of accompanying letters (*yorijo*) at the time of the courier dispatches has repeatedly caused impediments, this matter was previously communicated in full at the Edo residence. Accordingly, on this occasion the notification is as per the attached separate document. Please take note of this accordingly. That is all. 7th day of the 2nd month To: Suzuki Genbē Sasaji Gonuemon **Memorandum** ○ During the comings and goings of the domain courier, accompanying letters (*yorijo*) have accumulated in large numbers on every occasion, causing repeated impediments both in the domain and in Edo. Therefore, this matter has now been fully communicated at the Edo residence; from this time forward, it is strictly prohibited to submit letters that are excessive in volume or that consist of requests for intermediary assistance through personal connections. Should a letter that is excessive in volume be submitted, it shall be returned after examination at that time. Moreover, since there were already prior notifications on this matter, each person should be aware that, needless to say, personal duty letters (*kinjo*) for New Year's, midsummer/midwinter, and congratulatory/condolence occasions are entirely unnecessary — business letters being a separate matter. 2nd month, Year of the Rat --- **Item — Meiwa 1st year, Year of the Monkey [1764]** Item: On the 12th day of the 5th month, Sasaji Gonuemon conveyed the following: that the monthly ceremonial greeting (*tsukinami no o-rei*) will take place on the coming 15th day, and that all persons are to proceed to the castle at the fifth half-hour (*gohantoki*, approximately 9:00 a.m.). Regarding those of the junior/subordinate rank (*kodomo*): those who had proceeded to the castle at the time of the lord's entry into the domain (*o-nyūbu*) are to proceed to the castle at their own convenience. Furthermore, regarding the monthly greeting ceremony (*tsukinami o-rei*) going forward, a separate written notice is dispatched, as follows. **Order of Monthly Attendance at Court, Apart from New Year's and the Five Seasonal Festivals** ○ The 1st day of the month The 15th day In the 12th month only: the 28th day
