*(Continued from previous page)* …When those with appointed positions attend the martial arts review, a separate order shall be issued accordingly; please bear this in mind. 〆 (End of notice) --- **Kansei 4th Year (1792), Year of the Rat** **25th day of the 1st month:** Hashiba Oribe communicated the contents of two attached documents and instructed that they be conveyed to the officials concerned; accordingly, each was duly notified. --- **Regulations Concerning Ritual Purity (*O-kiyome*) — Henceforth as Follows** *(Concerning attendance at Shrine Visits)* 1. There is no need to warm oneself at the fire of the main sitting chambers or the *sukiya* (tea room/informal chambers). 2. A person in mourning defilement (*fuku-e*) shall withdraw before the Hour of Dusk on the previous day (around 6 p.m.). Once His Lordship's visit is concluded on the day of the event, such a person may return to the castle without difficulty. 3. Those serving in the procession (*gubu*) shall of course abstain from impure foods (*shōjin*) from the designated hour of purification onward; furthermore, they shall not sit in the same place or share the same fire as those under the defilement of mourning (*ki-fuku*), birth defilement (*san-e*), or menstrual defilement (*gesui-e*). 4. Those suffering from rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, or other swellings, provided no pus or blood is being discharged, may serve in the procession without difficulty. 5. Those with nosebleeds, blood in the phlegm, or rectal bleeding — provided the bleeding has stopped — may serve in the procession after performing a ritual ablution (*gyōzui*). 6. Those who have received moxibustion (*kyū*) may serve in the procession after a ritual ablution, regardless of the number of sites treated. 7. Those who have experienced nocturnal emission (*isei*) may serve in the procession after a ritual ablution. 8. If a led horse (*hikima*) dies along the way, the handler may proceed directly to the castle and serve in the procession without difficulty. 9. If a horse one is riding dies, one may serve in the procession and return to the castle after performing a ritual ablution. 10. If one of the attendants (*tomobito*) dies and one has assisted in the attendant's care in various ways, one may return to the castle and serve in the procession after a ritual ablution. 11. Even if one has cut down and killed a person, one may return to the castle and serve in the procession after a ritual ablution. 12. A sword with blood on it may be worn at one's side without difficulty once it has been polished and cleaned. 13. **Food defilement (*jiki-e*):** Chamois (*kamoshika*), wolf, badger, chicken → **5 days** Ox, horse → **150 days** Pig, dog, sheep, deer, monkey, wild boar → **70 days** Two-legged creatures (birds), rabbits, "upward-facing creatures" (possibly a category of birds) and fish — treated the same as fish. Leather goods (*kawa-mono*) shall be abstained from beginning at the hour designated for abstinence. 〆 (End of notice) --- 1. At present, in the castle in Edo, the Senior Councillors (*rōjū*) and others have taken to wearing *tamago-iro* (egg-yellow) colored *tabi* (split-toed socks). Accordingly, both at the residence (*o-yashiki*) and in the home domain (*o-kuni-omote*, i.e., Fukui), all parties may use them as they see fit. 2. When wearing summer *tsugi-kamishimo* (a formal vest-and-skirt combination for summer), one shall wear regular *hakama* (divided skirt) over the upper garment of linen *kamishimo*; or, when wearing the lower garment of linen *kamishimo*, one shall wear a regular unlined *kataginu* (sleeveless vest) on top.
