眼が車のように回転するように、ドンという一声の火の塊が定九郎の背中に当たった。苦しいと叫ぶ間もなく、意識を失って死んでしまった。なんと痛快なことであろう。この夜、勘平は一頭の猪を追い出し、忙しく鉄砲を構えて近づいて撃った。猪を撃ち殺したと思ったが、それは生きた人間であった。「苦しい」と一声叫んだので、人の命を誤って奪ってしまったことを知った。どこの誰かも分からず、遠慮して大声で名前を尋ねることもできず、まだ救って生かすことができるかと思い、彼を起こそうとした時、手が一つの金入れに触れた。拾い上げてみると四、五十両の金子であった。勘平は言った、「これは天の賜物だ」と。財布を手に取り、頭上に頂いて、猪よりも速く一直線に、飛ぶように去って行った。さて、この後の成り行きはいかに、次回の解説を聞かれよ。

Like eyes spinning like wheels, with a loud "thud" a ball of fire struck Sadakurō in the back. Before he could cry out in pain, he lost consciousness and died. How satisfying this was!
