第六回
佳児が君夫のために身を売り 勘平が窮屈のために命を絶つ
三崎の歌舞、宛丘の風、出てきて見よ我が家の翁よ、老婆を連れて
手を取って去れ、我がその偕老の家翁よ、婆さんを連れて年豊を賞でよ、
この一首の詞は、田舎の麦秋の時候の小唄である。さて話は変わって、与市兵衛の掘っ立て小屋に、今来勘平が流れ着いて、ここに身を寄せて、とりあえず彼と一緒に住んでいる。勘平の妻である活佳児は、この日早起きして、寝乱れ髪を梳かそうと、櫛箱を開けた。夫がまだ一度も家に帰らないことを思うと、多くの心の思いが、乱れた髪のもつれのように解けがたく、胸中の愁いの苦しみを、誰に訴えればよいのだろうか。櫛を取って梳き、油灰を払い過ごして、きちんと整えて、三つに分けた髻に結い上げた。見れば惜しむべき美しい容貌

This verse is a country folk song for the time of the wheat harvest. Now the story changes: at Yoichibei's ramshackle hut, Kanpei has now drifted here and taken shelter, temporarily living together with him. Kanpei's wife, the beautiful Katsuko, rose early this day, wanting to comb her disheveled hair from sleep, and opened her comb box.
