《割書：安永八年の｜大火》 ソレから話（はなし）は又（ま）た変（かは）るがソレは安永（あんえい）八年十一月四日に此（この）吉田（よしだ）に大火（たいくわ）のあつた事（こと）である其（その）時（とき）は本町（ほんまち）から
失火（しつくわ）して町家（てうか）が三百八十四 戸（こ）侍家舗（さむらいやしき）が一 区（く）焼失（せうしつ）したのであるが此（この）時（とき）は丁度（ちようど）信明（のぶあき）が初（はじ）めて入国（にふこく）して在城（ざいじやう）
火消組 されて居（を）つたのである尚（なほ）ソレに就（つい）て御話（おはなし）したいのは此（この）吉田町（よしだまち）の火消組（ひけしぐみ）の事（こと）であるが天明（てんめい）七年に其（その）四 組（くみ）
を市中（しちう）に設（まを）けて一 組（くみ）は拾壱人 宛（づゝ）であつたが総（すべ）ての道具類（どうぐるゐ）は藩（はん）から下（さ）げたものと見（み）へる幸（さいはひ）船町（ふなまち）に当時（たうじ）
組員（くみゐん）から差出（さしだ）した書付（かきつけ）が残（のこ）つて居（を）るが実（じつ）に趣味（しゆみ）あるものと思（おも）ふから之（こ）れも全文（ぜんぶん）を掲（かゝ）ぐることとする

此度町火消四組一組拾壱人宛被仰付一組畑ケ中源助組頭ニ被仰付組合連判名前之通町火消相勤申候
一出火有之候節者早速欠附出精取鎮メ可申候若々難取鎮メ出火ニ相成候節者御城内
御役人中様御下知並町御役人中御差図ヲ以消口相働可申候組々散乱不仕様ニ申合相働可申候火消看
板諸道具左之通御渡被成組頭方ニ預リ置私用ニ決而相用申間敷候

【本文】
内五十二箇村、遠江国敷知郡の内十七箇村、城東郡の内五箇村、近江国浅井郡の内二十箇村、伊香郡の内二箇村、高島郡の内下開田村、高七万石（目録は別紙にあり）の事、宛行い終わった。代々の例に依り領知の状件の如し。
天明八年三月五日
松平伊豆守殿へ
それから話はまた変わるが、それは安永八年十一月四日にこの吉田に大火があった事である。その時は本町から失火して町家が三百八十四戸、侍屋敷が一区焼失したのであるが、この時はちょうど信明が初めて入国して在城されていたのである。
なおそれについてお話したいのは、この吉田町の火消組の事であるが、天明七年にその四組を市中に設けて、一組は十一人ずつであったが、すべての道具類は藩から下げたものと見える。幸い船町に当時組員から差し出した書付が残っているが、実に趣味あるものと思うから、これも全文を掲げることとする。
差し上げ申す一札の事
この度町火消四組一組十一人ずつ仰せ付けられ、一組畑ヶ中源助組頭に仰せ付けられ、組合連判名前の通り町火消相勤め申し候。
一、出火これあり候節は早速駆け付け出精取り鎮め申すべく候。もしも取り鎮め難く出火に相成り候節は御城内御役人中様御下知並びに町御役人中御指図を以て消し口相働き申すべく候。組々散乱いたさぬように申し合わせ相働き申すべく候。火消看板諸道具左の通り御渡し成され組頭方に預かり置き、私用に決して相用い申すまじく候。

**Main Text:**
52 villages within [Kamo District], 17 villages from Shikichi District in Tōtōmi Province, 5 villages from Kaitō District, 20 villages from Asai District in Ōmi Province, 2 villages from Ika District, Shimo-Kaida Village from Takashima District, total assessment 70,000 koku (inventory on separate paper). This grant has been completed. According to hereditary precedent, this certificate of territorial lordship is issued.

Now the topic changes again to the great fire that occurred in Yoshida on the 4th day of the 11th month of An'ei 8 (1779). The fire started from Honmachi and consumed 384 townhouses and one district of samurai residences. This happened just when Nobuaki had first entered his domain and was residing in the castle.
**Fire Brigade Organization:** I would also like to discuss the fire brigade organization of Yoshida town. In Tenmei 7 (1787), four brigades were established in the town, with eleven men per brigade. All equipment appears to have been provided by the domain. Fortunately, a document submitted by brigade members at that time remains in Funamachi, which I find quite interesting, so I will present the complete text here as well.
**Pledge Document Submitted**
This time, four town fire brigades have been appointed with eleven men each per brigade. Hatanaka Gensuke has been appointed as head of one brigade. As per the joint signature list, we shall serve as town firefighters.
1. When a fire occurs, we shall rush immediately and work diligently to extinguish it. If the fire proves difficult to control, we shall work at the fire site under orders from the castle officials and town officials. The brigades shall coordinate without scattering and work together. The firefighting signboards and various tools listed below have been distributed and are kept with the brigade leader. They shall never be used for private purposes.

We have certainly received the above items. When fires occur, if candles and other supplies are needed, we shall receive them from the monthly duty officials through written requests. If any tools are lost at fire scenes, we shall report this immediately. If items are lost through private negligence, the fire brigade shall promptly replace them.
1. Even if illness, obstacles, or distant travel affect any of the eleven brigade members, we shall always be vigilant and have substitute personnel ready so that fire response is not hindered.
1. We understand and humbly accept that firefighting equipment will be subject to periodic inspections.
1. Regarding rice stipends for this service:
The authorities provide two rice bags per brigade annually. The brigade leader receives 1 to 2 shō of rice, with the remaining rice distributed among the ten members as ordered. We are grateful for this arrangement. We understand that rewards will be given based on performance observed during firefighting efforts. Therefore, we submit this joint pledge document.
