一、長州侯の御事天下の有志一同穅慨罷在候様子追々御藩士ニも出会いたし候所確乎たる御正
義感佩罷在候事ニ御座候彼御学館ニ於る専ら古道学御専用ニ相成去る八月中片山貫一郎と申
仁君命ニて下向拙義(《割書：不｜ 明》)もの料金都合四十両程御取入ニ相成尚又写本も不残御入用の由ニ候
へ共手廻り不申漸く五六部相送申候
一、木像云々の人師岡も壮健の由西川も此節は無異ニ相済長尾も牢死の様申候へ共無事の趣其
外何れも無事の由相聞候
右五條同氏ゟ申参り貴君へも宜と申事ニ御座候先は幸便ニて右等の義申上度且時候御安否をも
述度如此御座候乍未御老母様御始いつれもへ宜被仰上可被下候
家内ゟも一同宜申上候様申出候もはや四五日ニ相成折角御しのぎ可被成来陽芽出度得貴意度

像を引き出して其首を切りたる一件を指せるものなり尚中略とせる部分は憚る処あり乍遺

答三條殿等は御届の上国元へ御連立の趣天誅組大和国中へ相觸候書面藤堂家ゟ大和一揆鎮撫の
歎願書等先日齋藤助持参ニて写置申候定て御覧有之候義と相察申候此程打続早打通行定て関東
ニ変有之候義と被存候如何承度候則(不明)入御覧候長置は御無用早々御かへし可被下候

一、長州侯のことについて、天下の有志一同が憤慨している様子で、だんだん御藩士にもお会いしたところ、確固たる御正義に感服しているところです。かの御学館において専ら古道学をご専用になり、去る八月中、片山貫一郎と申す仁が君命によって下向し、私のもの料金都合四十両ほどお取り入れになり、なお写本もすべてご入用の由ですが、手回りがつかず、やっと五六部をお送り申しました。
一、木像云々の人、師岡も壮健の由、西川もこの節は異常なく済み、長尾も牢死のよう申していますが無事の趣、その他いずれも無事の由、相聞いています。
右五条、同氏から申し参り、貴君へもよろしくと申すことです。先は好都合にて右等のこと申し上げたく、かつ時候のご安否をも述べたく、このようにございます。まだお母様をお始め、いずれにもよろしくお伝え下さい。
家内からも一同よろしく申し上げるよう申し出ています。もはや四五日になり、折角お凌ぎになり、来春芽出たく貴意を得たく。

First, regarding the Lord of Chōshū, patriots throughout the realm are indignant, and when I gradually met with retainers from your domain, I found them deeply moved by your unwavering righteousness. At that academy, ancient learning is exclusively practiced, and in August, a person named Katayama Kan'ichirō came down by lord's command. About forty ryō in total for my materials was received, and all manuscript copies were also needed, but I couldn't manage the arrangements and barely sent five or six copies.
First, regarding the wooden statue incident, Morooka is reportedly in good health, Nishikawa is also doing well these days without incident, and although they say Nagao died in prison, I hear he is actually safe, and all others are reportedly safe as well.
The above five points came from the same person, who asked me to give his regards to you. I wanted to mention these matters on this good occasion and also inquire about your health during this season. Please give my regards to your mother and everyone else.
My family also asked me to send regards to everyone. It's already been four or five days, and I hope you will persevere through this and that we may exchange thoughts come spring.

The final passages about "Lord of Chōshū," "wooden statue incident," etc., refer to reports from Hirata (probably Tetsutane, the adopted son of Atsutane). The "wooden statue incident" undoubtedly refers to the incident where Ashikaga Takauji's wooden statue was removed from Kyoto's Tōji-in temple and its head was cut off. The omitted section contains sensitive material and was regrettably excluded.

Postscript: Regarding Lord Hitotsubashi's death, have you heard any interesting theories? I would like to know. The imperial edict to the Chōshū house on August 18th, their response, and their second response; Lord Sanjō and others reported and departed together for their home domain; the circular distributed throughout Yamato Province by the Tenchū group; the petition from the Tōdō house for pacification of the Yamato uprising, etc. - the other day Saitō-suke brought copies which I transcribed. I'm sure you have seen them. Recently there have been continuous express messengers, so there must certainly have been changes in the Kantō region. How are things? I would like to know. Please examine the enclosed (unclear). No need to keep it long - please return it quickly.

I heard from Ōyama that two volumes of "Historical Poetry" from Mr. Hirata arrived by eel boat at your location, so please send them at your convenience. Also, I have acquired about eighty sets of various sword fittings that were requested for my son - I would like to send these as well. Should I leave them at Sanzō-en? Please consider this.
