参河国は上古穂の国、御川の国と唱へ後三河と改め又何時の頃よりか東三河西三河の区別を
なすに至れり、蓋東参は豊橋を中心として南北設楽、八名、宝飯、渥美の五郡相接続し、西
参は岡崎を軌軸として東西加茂、額田、碧海、幡豆の五郡相連結するが故なり、而して参河
の地たる所謂名所旧蹟の伝ふべきものなしとせず、去れど未だ之れが案内記あるを聞かず、
思ふに名勝の地を弘く社会に紹介するは啻に歴史地理の参考となり探凉避寒の栞たるのみ
ならず、交通の材料となり旅客の案内となりて、土地の繁栄を稗補すること尠少にあらざる
べしと信ず、是に於て其第一着手として本編を発行するに至れり、然れども急速の編纂に係
り詳略其当を得ざるは編者が江湖に向つて予め謝する所なり、
本書を東参名勝案内と謂ふ、所謂名所旧蹟のみを蒐集せるものにあらずして、現時に於て有
名なる官衙、商店等をも弘く採録せり、是れ即ち名勝（●●）なる文字を選みたる所以なり、

緒言

三河国は古代には「穂の国」「御川の国」と呼ばれ、後に三河と改められ、また何時頃からか東三河・西三河の区別をするようになった。思うに東三河は豊橋を中心として南北設楽、八名、宝飯、渥美の五郡が相接続し、西三河は岡崎を軸として東西加茂、額田、碧海、幡豆の五郡が相連結するからである。そして三河の地には、いわゆる名所旧跡として伝えるべきものがないわけではないが、まだこれらの案内記があることを聞いたことがない。

思うに、名勝の地を広く社会に紹介することは、ただ歴史地理の参考となり避暑避寒の手引きとなるのみならず、交通の材料となり旅行者の案内となって、土地の繁栄を助けることも少なくないであろうと信じる。ここにおいて、その第一歩として本編を発行することとなった。しかしながら急速な編纂によるため、詳略が適切でないのは編者が世間に向かって予めお詫びするところである。

本書を「東参名勝案内」というが、いわゆる名所旧跡のみを収集したものではなく、現在において有名な官庁、商店等も広く収録した。これがすなわち「名勝」なる文字を選んだ理由である。

Preface

Mikawa Province was called "Ho-no-kuni" (Land of Rice Ears) and "Mikawa-no-kuni" (Land of the Imperial River) in ancient times, later renamed Mikawa, and at some point came to be distinguished as Eastern Mikawa and Western Mikawa. Eastern Mikawa centers around Toyohashi with the five counties of Kita-Shitara, Minami-Shitara, Yana, Hoi, and Atsumi connected to each other, while Western Mikawa centers around Okazaki with the five counties of Higashi-Kamo, Nishi-Kamo, Nukata, Hekikai, and Hazu linked together. The land of Mikawa is not without so-called famous places and historical sites that should be preserved, yet I have not heard of any guidebooks for these places.

I believe that introducing scenic spots widely to society not only serves as reference for history and geography and as a guide for summer retreats and winter escapes, but also becomes material for transportation and guidance for travelers, contributing no small amount to the prosperity of the region. Therefore, as a first step, we have come to publish this volume. However, due to the hasty compilation, the editor apologizes in advance to the public for any inadequacies in detail and omission.

This book is called "Guide to Famous Sites of Eastern Mikawa." It is not merely a collection of so-called famous places and historical sites, but broadly includes famous government offices, commercial establishments, and the like of the present time. This is precisely why we chose the term "famous sites."
