床の高さは三、四尺で、棟はそれほど高くない。海風を避けるためである。屋根は瓦を用いる。畳、戸、障子は日本と同じである。柱は大木で、鬼界ヶ島に産する羅漢杉を用いる。《割書：羅漢松は槇である。羅漢杉も槇の類であろうか》価格は非常に高い。木目は極めて美しく、数年間虫に食われることがない。年を経るにしたがって、その艶は鏡のようになる。壁は板羽目にして、唐紙を貼る。竹簾は極めて粗く、細い丸竹で編む。軒に掛ける。庭の構造は、築山に黄楊、松の類を、あるいは円く、あるいは四角に刈り込んだものを植える。小池を掘って魚を飼い、水中に小石を立て、その上に蘇鉄、その他小さな木などを植えて観賞とする。

大体、外囲いは牡蠣石を積んで作る。《割書：牡蠣石は牡蠣石で、磯石の類であろうか》大きな家では特に磨いて削り合わせるので、一枚の石で切り立ったかのように立派である。寺院は多く黄楊の生垣を刈り込んだものである。またこの国にのみ産する。

The floor height is three to four shaku, and the ridge is not very high. This is to avoid sea winds. The roof uses tiles. Tatami mats, doors, and shoji screens are the same as in Japan. The pillars are large trees, using Rakan cedar that grows on Kikaigashima Island. 《Note: Rakan pine is maki (Japanese yew). Is Rakan cedar also a type of maki?》 The price is extremely expensive. The wood grain is extremely beautiful, and it is not eaten by insects for several years. As years pass, its luster becomes like a mirror. The walls are made with board wainscoting and covered with Chinese paper. Bamboo blinds are extremely coarse, woven with thin round bamboo and hung from the eaves. For garden construction, boxwood and pine varieties are planted on artificial hills, trimmed either round or square. Small ponds are dug to keep fish, small stones are erected in the water, and cycads and other small trees are planted on them for ornamental purposes.

Generally, outer enclosures are made by stacking oyster stones. 《Note: Oyster stones are oyster stones, perhaps a type of shore stone?》 In large houses, they are especially polished and cut to fit together, so they appear as if cut from a single sheet of stone, making them quite magnificent. Temple grounds mostly use trimmed boxwood hedges. This also grows only in this country.
