甚太夫は敵意を抱いて、女中たちと共に滝川を憎く思い、他に思案もなく、丑の時参りと心づき、まず頭の上の蝋燭を立てなくてはならないと、鎌倉中の古物店を詮議してみれば、
急な事ゆえ、一つもなし。三本足ゆえ、殊にと心づけども、先が曲がっているゆえ、蝋燭が立たず。四角なもののようでは足が一本、大白蝋燭の物入りは構わねども、四本というは聞き及ばず。いくらも古いのがありそうなもの、一つもないというものは、遠州浜松じゃないが、広いようで狭いと思う。
