畳を敷いて皆大道へ出た。さて、古い家や古い土蔵は
皆倒れ、その他神社仏閣、石鳥居、石灯籠、或いは
築地、高い塀の倒れることは非常に多く、たとえ丈夫な
土蔵であっても、ひびが入らないものはない。棚の諸道具は
落ちて損じ、竈は倒れ、襖や戸、障子は言うまでもなく、
家屋が歪んで戸の締まりが悪いのは皆共通している中に、
古い家の類は地震によって床が戻り、戸の締まりが
悪くなったのも実に興味深い。その物音は天地に響き、

から雨がぱらぱらと降り出し、夜七つ時にドロドロと
大分強く揺れる。十二日、すべて日々に四五度は時を違えず
ドロドロと揺れ、十三日に至り、土蔵の傷んだ
ままに雨を受けて絶えず土が滑り落ち
するのは実にその音がすさまじく、夜は特に世
間も物静かになるので、その驚きは理解
できず、ひそひそと語り合うのも実に興味深い。

Now, old houses and old storehouses all collapsed, and besides these, the collapse of shrines and temples, stone torii gates, stone lanterns, or earthen walls and high fences was extremely numerous. Even sturdy storehouses without exception had cracks. Various utensils on shelves fell and were damaged, stoves collapsed, and fusuma doors and shoji screens need not even be mentioned. Among all the houses that were warped with poorly closing doors, it is quite interesting how old houses had their floors displaced by the earthquake, causing doors to close poorly. The sound of all this echoed between heaven and earth.

Then on the tenth day there was still some rumbling and occasional tremors. On the eleventh day, after evening, rain began to fall in drops, and at the seventh hour of night there was strong rumbling and considerable shaking. On the twelfth day, altogether there were four or five tremors daily at regular intervals. By the thirteenth day, with the storehouses remaining damaged, they received rain and soil constantly slid down, the sound of which was truly dreadful. Especially at night when the world became quiet, the shock was incomprehensible, and people whispering to each other was quite remarkable.
