く馬挑灯（ばちやうちん）をともしをき友 親族（しんるい）へ見舞に
廻る事お互（たかひ）【送り仮名に「ひ」があるので振り仮名の「ひ」は重複。】ひにてころび寐の枕元（まくらもと）へ犬の
這（は）ひ来（く）るもいとおかし井の水は皆 濁（にご）れり
少し気のおさまれる方は大道にて茶をわかし
飯（はん）をものし沢【澤？】をくみ漸（やうやく）食物のんどを通る
といへども心はそゞろに只ドロ〳〵とゆりたへず
町内にはかな棒（ばう）わり竹を引鳴（ひきな）らし火用心

てまじなひあたへるあり其哥に

現代語訳
馬挑灯を灯しておき、友人や親族へ見舞いに
回ることをお互いにして、転び寝の枕元へ犬が
這い来るのもとても面白い。井戸の水は皆濁った。
少し気の落ち着いた人は大通りで茶を沸かし
飯を作り、水を汲んで、ようやく食べ物が喉を通る
と言うものの、心はそぞろでただドロドロと揺れ続ける。
町内では拍子木や割竹を鳴らして火の用心の
触れを回ることが厳重で、どこからか老人がやって来て
まじないを与える者がある。その歌に
緩くとも決して抜けることのない要石
鹿島の神がある限りは
と皆書き写し、戸口の柱或いは大黒柱に貼り付け、
もったいなくも天照大神宮の御祓いを頭に

They lit horse lanterns and kept them burning, visiting friends and relatives to check on their well-being,

Everyone copied this down and pasted it on doorway pillars or main support pillars.
Most reverently, they placed purification charms from the Grand Shrine of Amaterasu on their heads
and tucked secret incantation texts into their topknots. Especially those caring for elderly people,
sick people, and children - their anxiety was beyond words. Among them, some
were crushed and fell when pressed by houses, others were caught between objects and pressed against walls
