The sutra says: "Like water and waves being neither one nor different." The interpretation says: Raising an analogy to show that they are neither one nor different. The above two wisdoms occur in the same moment, but because their two functions are distinct, they are called "not one." Because they are the same wisdom, they are called "not different." Like water and waves.
The sutra says: "Up to all practices, pāramitās, meditative concentrations, and dhāraṇīs being neither one nor two." The interpretation says: The second [part] analogously explains that all practices are also neither one nor different.
The sutra says: "Yet each practice is accomplished." The interpretation says: Revealing the accomplishment of practices. In this stage, because the two wisdoms are accomplished, all remaining practices are completely accomplished.
The sutra says: "Through practicing for four incalculable eons, one enters this treasury gate of merit." The interpretation says: This is the third [section on] the time period of entering the treasury. Because one surpasses the previous three patiences, it says "four incalculable [eons]." In this ground, because flawless contemplation is accomplished, one encompasses and stores all gates of merit. Logically, all stages should have this gate, but because it is not the first, it is not separately established.
The sutra says: "Having no birth from three-realm karmic habits, completing the old and not creating new [karma]." The interpretation says: Distinctions in receiving birth. Entering the first ground, severing discriminative delusions, not creating new karma, therefore completing old karma without creating new. One explanation: Master Fan says that karma-generating ignorance is eliminated by seeing, therefore completing the old without creating new karma. From the eighth ground and above, the manifested body is only transformation. Before the seventh ground, one intentionally arouses delusions, nourishes three-realm karma, and receives bodies with limited lifespans. This transformation body receives the retribution of ten kings. Adding the current explanation: first-ground bodhisattvas, if those with superior great wisdom are born in the Extensive Fruit Heaven and receive transformation birth. The sutra says: "Through vow-power, having transformation birth in all pure lands." The interpretation says: Clarifying birth in pure lands. Adding the current explanation: if those with superior compassion, afflictions nourish karma and they are born in the three realms. If those with superior wisdom, they receive transformation bodies and are born in pure lands.
The sutra says: "Always cultivating abandonment contemplation, therefore ascending to the kumārabhūta stage." The interpretation says: The limits of entering the stage. "Kumārabhūta stage" means "child ground." Because of being born into the Buddha family, it is also called "joyful離欲 ground" and also called "victorious over evil māra stage." In the first ground, separating from the five fears and surpassing the two-vehicle māra.
The sutra says: "Always bestowing the four great treasure repositories upon people." The interpretation says: This is treasure giving. One explanation: giving the three repositories plus the miscellaneous repository to all sentient beings. Another explanation: the Śrīmālā Sūtra's four types of treasure repositories are: first, priceless—the bodhisattva vehicle; second, high price—the pratyekabuddha vehicle; third, medium price—the śrāvaka vehicle; fourth, low price—the human and heavenly vehicles.
The sutra says: "Furthermore, Virtue-Wisdom Bodhisattva." The interpretation says: The fifth dharma teacher stage. Fully possessing moral virtue and being together with wisdom, it is called "Virtue-Wisdom." This can be understood according to the previous [explanation].
The sutra says: "Through the four immeasurable minds." The interpretation says: Distinguishing contemplation differences. In order to counteract anger afflictions, one cultivates the four immeasurables.
The sutra says: "Extinguishing the anger and other afflictions of the three existences." The interpretation says: Distinguishing the removal of obstacles. Through practicing loving-kindness, one can extinguish the anger and other afflictions of the three realms. sutra text saying "three-existence anger" speaks according to the adaptive teaching approach. Also, the words are general but the meaning is specific. Because of anger in the desire realm among the three existences, it says "three-existence anger." Speaking truthfully, it does not extend to the upper realms because there are no objects of condition. Saying "etc." includes jealousy, harm, etc.
The sutra says: "Dwelling in middle patience and practicing all merits." The interpretation says: The division of entering the stage. The faith-patience stage extends through three grounds. This corresponds to the second, therefore called "middle patience." In this stage, with immeasurables as primary, one universally cultivates all practices.
The sutra says: "Through five incalculable eons practicing great loving-kindness contemplation, mind after mind always present before, entering the signless jātismara stage and transforming all sentient beings." The interpretation says: The time period of entering the stage. "Jātismara" means "fulfilled power," also called "離闍" and also called "fearlessness." Master Zang says: crossing black 闍. Master Fan says: power arising, namely wisdom power. Within five great eons, practicing loving-kindness with wisdom fulfilled, transforming sentient beings.
The sutra says: "Furthermore, Bright-Wisdom Way-person." The interpretation says: In the sixth bright-wisdom stage, practicing the three-brightness contemplation, therefore called "Bright-Wisdom." This can be understood according to the above.
The sutra says: "Always practicing the three-brightness contemplation in signless patience." The interpretation says: The second [section] distinguishing contemplation differences. "Three-brightness contemplation" means: first, knowledge of past lives brightness; second, knowledge of birth and death brightness; third, knowledge of exhaustion of outflows brightness.
The sutra says: "Knowing the dharmas of three times as having no coming, no going, no dwelling place, mind is extinguished." The interpretation says: Revealing the characteristics of contemplating ability and the contemplated realm. Future does not yet exist, past has already been extinguished, present does not dwell. Saying "mind after mind extinguished" means because there are no conditioned objects, the conditioning mind is extinguished moment after moment.

The sutra says: "Exhausting the ignorance afflictions of the three realms." The interpretation says: Distinguishing the removal of obstacles.
The sutra says: "Attaining the three-brightness all-merit contemplation." The interpretation says: Bright virtue fulfilled. Removing the ignorance of three times, attaining the three bright virtues.
The sutra says: "Always through six incalculable eons gathering immeasurable brightness pāramitās, therefore entering the gāruḍa stage, through signless practice upholding all dharmas." The interpretation says: The time period of entering the stage. "Gāruḍa" means "crossing the edge." In this stage, one distances from base, despicable, lowly views. Master Fan says: gāruḍa means "leaving obstacles"—separating from the ignorance, etc. of the three realms.
The sutra says: "Furthermore, Jyotiṣmatī Sacred Awakening-Realization Bodhisattva." The interpretation says: The seventh dharma teacher. The textual divisions can be understood. "Jyotiṣmatī" means "wisdom mother." In this stage, the two emptinesses of person and dharma can generate the holy path, therefore called "wisdom mother." Master Zang says: advancing to sever conceptualization, therefore called "awakening-realization." Realm can generate wisdom; taking realm as wisdom mother. From analogy it is called "flame ground." Master Fan says: Jyotiṣmatī means "the knowable"—having the three natures of discrimination, etc. as the realm reached by the holy path.
The sutra says: "Cultivating accordance-with-dharma patience." The interpretation says: Revealing the distinctive characteristics of the ground. In accordance patience, there are superior, middle, and inferior. This fourth ground, being first among the three patience stages, is called "accordance-with-dharma patience." Because one cultivates the holy path, it is called "cultivating accordance-with-dharma patience," therefore called "accordance-with-dharma patience."
The sutra says: "Going against the flow of five views, gathering immeasurable merit, dwelling in the sotāpanna stage." The interpretation says: Distinguishing its stage. "Sotāpanna" has two meanings: first, going against the flow; second, cultivation. In this ground,
