【Shiroso (Veratrum album / False Hellebore)?】 As listed in the "Tashikiben" (Encyclopedia of Identifications), section on poisonous plants: Rirō (藜蘆, *Veratrum*) Japanese name: Shishinokubiki (志々乃久比幾) ○ The author's note: possibly Ōmoto (於毛土) Alternate names: Sansō (Mountain Onion)〔from the *Bielu* / "Supplementary Records"〕 Sōzen 〔same source〕 Sōsen (read as "毯") Sōki 〔from *Wupu*〕 Hōro (豊蘆) 〔same〕 Kansō (憨葱) 〔from the *Bencao Gangmu*〕 Rokusō (鹿葱) Li Shizhen states: The color black is called "Rei" (黎). Since the rhizome (蘆) of this plant has black skin, it is thus named. Because the base of the root resembles a scallion (negi), it is commonly called "Sōkan Rirō" (Scallion-tube Veratrum), which is correct. People of the North call it "Kansō" (foolish onion), while people of the South call it "Rokusō" (deer onion). 【Seal】 Medicinal Herb Kinoto-Tori year, Rinshō (6th month), 19th day Drawn from life --- From the "Wamyō Ruijushō" (Japanese Names Classified): Rirō (藜蘆) (Japanese readings: Yamauara / Shishinokuhinoki) Based on the Honzō's entry for Rirō 〔The first character is read "Rei"〕 Japanese name: Yamauara (夜未宇波良) Another source gives: Shishinokuhinoki (之々乃久比乃木) Rirō — nowadays called Shiroso (シュロソウ, *Veratrum maackii*). Also known as Hohotsukuri and Nikkō-ran (Nikkō Orchid). Several varieties exist: round-leaved type 〇 long-leaved type. The plant illustrated here has roots with connected nodes (like a string of beads) 〇 bamboo-grass type roots without nodes 〇 stalk type, one root with one leaf, resembling the root of Hange (*Pinellia ternata*). --- The author states: To read Rirō (藜蘆) as "Ōmoto" is incorrect. Ōmoto refers to Manyūsei (*Rohdea japonica*, Sacred Lily), which is an entirely different plant. Because the leaves of Rirō resemble those of Shiran (*Bletilla striata*, Purple Orchid) and Hakuran (White Orchid), it is called "Nikkō-ran" (Nikkō Orchid). This name is the most widely understood in common usage. Perhaps it received the name "Nikkō" because it grows abundantly on Mt. Nikkō. Rendering it as "Ōmoto" is without any basis. Furthermore, the identification of Rirō as Ebine (*Calanthe*, 他楡草) in the *Wakan Sansai Zue* is also incorrect — Ebine is an entirely separate plant. Rirō will appear again in Summer Volume, Scroll 7 (or Book 2), under "Rare Specimens."
