段成（たんせい）式が『酉陽雑爼』および梁元（りゃうけん）帝の
『金樓子』の南国の人の言に曰く、五香はともに
これ一木にして、その根はみな栴檀、節はこれ沈香、
花はこれ鶏舌香、葉はこれ藿香、膠（やに）はこれ
薫陸と云う。昔は木の部に入れたり。今は
用いるものは草なり。茎は方形にして節あり、中に
空（す）あり。葉は茄（なす）の如く、あるいは■の葉に似て
薄し。紫蘇の葉に似て青し。綿花（きわた）の葉、
茄の葉、苧（からむし）の葉、皆よく似たり。云々。
予曰く、この説よく『地錦抄』に合う。
薹鷺草（とうざきそう）
或いは曰く 地黄菜（あぜちわう） この二名は判断し難く、本名は未だ正しく定まらず。
ある人曰く、生瓜菜ならんと。

Duan Chengshi's "Youyang Zazu" and Emperor Yuan of Liang's
"Jinloozi" record that the people of the southern lands say that the five
fragrances all come from one tree: its root is all sandalwood (sendan),
its joints are agarwood (jinkō), its flowers are clove (keizetsukō),
its leaves are kakkō (agastache herb), and its resin is
kunroku (frankincense). In ancient times this plant was classified
under the trees section. However, what is used today is a herb.
The stem is square with nodes, hollow inside.
The leaves resemble those of eggplant, or are thin and similar to ■ leaves.
They resemble perilla leaves and are green. The leaves of cotton (kiwata),
eggplant, and ramie (karamushi) all closely resemble it. And so forth.
I [the author] say: this description accords well with the "Chikinsho."
Tōzakisō (a plant name)
Some say [it is called] Azechiwō (Jiohuangcai; ground yellow vegetable). These two names are difficult to determine, and the original name has not yet been correctly established.
One person says it may be Namauri-na (fresh melon greens).
