『本草綱目』 はじめて南方より来たる。ゆえに蠻瓜と名づく。唐・宋以前には聞くことなし。今は常蔬(じょうそ)となしたり。

"Bencao Gangmu" (Honzō Kōmoku): It first came from the southern regions, and therefore was named Banka (蠻瓜, "Barbarian Gourd"). Before the Tang and Song dynasties, it was unheard of. Today it has become a common vegetable.
