Suike (suge)
In the sixth month, leaves are cut and sewn into hats
These are called sedge hats. In Ōmi and
Ise provinces, they plant much in paddy fields and
profit from it
The "Mōgyū" commentary by Master Zhu states:
To peer at heaven through sedge, to
peer at the sea - this is only slight knowledge
The "Yamato Honzō"
records this in the water plant category
Hinoe-Inu year, early summer, 9th day, true copy
The "Wamyō Ruijushō" (Japanese Names Classified Collection) states:
Sedge (suge) The "Tang Rhymes" says sedge 《pronunciation: kan, the character is sometimes written as "kan"》
Japanese name Sukei It is the name of a grass
The "Imyō Ruijushō" (Alternative Names Classified Collection) differs:
Sanshiba
Kotobuki says:
Although sedge hats are produced in many provinces, those from Kaga Province are considered the finest. The sedge color
is white and pure, with fine thread sewing excellent. Also, sedge hats from Settsu Province's Naniwa are considered
a famous product
From the "Man'yōshū":
The glorious Naniwa sedge hat, so fine and old
Who will wear this hat in the future?
Also, the "Engi-shiki" mentions the Kasanui clan of Settsu Province. Today, the local people of Fukae Village east of Tamatsukuri in Osaka
specialize in sewing sedge hats as their family business. This must be a tradition from ancient times.
