『本草一家言』に記されている内容：
櫨（ハゼ） 山漆
大葉漆と小葉漆の二種類がある
梅園の記述：
漆の木で大葉のものは野にあり、「ヌルデ」と言う。小葉のものが櫨である。どちらも蝋や漆を採取して民間で使用する。今「ウルシ」と呼んでいる。江戸の深川御舟蔵前の空き地に櫨を多く植えられており、この場所を「ウルシ畑」と言う。また赤坂御門外の空き地及び麻布古川通りの堤に櫨の御用木を植えられている。
『大和本草』の記述：
黄櫨（ハジ） その実で蝋燭を作る
民間で栽培して利益とする。また弓を作る。
『救荒本草』に「回々醋」という木があり、これはハジの木であろうか。
『倭名類聚抄』の記述：
黄櫨（ハンシ） 『文選注』に「櫨（落胡の反、和名は波迩之）」とあり、今の黄櫨（ハジ）の木である。
黄櫨は黄色に染めるもので、天子の御袍を「黄櫨染（ワウロゼン）」と称する。
『新古今和歌集』より：
鶉鳴くかた野に立てる櫨紅葉
散らすばかりに秋風ぞ吹く

Haji (Haze) - Mountain lacquer
There are two varieties: large-leaf lacquer and small-leaf lacquer
Baien's commentary:
The large-leaf lacquer tree grows wild and is called "nurude." The small-leaf variety is the haji. Both are used to extract wax and lacquer for civilian use, now called "urushi" (lacquer). Many haji trees have been planted in the vacant land in front of the Ofunagura (Imperial Boat Warehouse) in Fukagawa, Edo, and this place is called "Urushi-batake" (Lacquer Field). Haji trees for official use are also planted in vacant land outside Akasaka Gate and on the embankment along Furukawa Street in Azabu.
From "Yamato Honzō" (Japanese Materia Medica):
Yellow haji (Haji) - Its fruit is used to make candles
People cultivate it for profit. It is also used to make bows.
In "Kyūkō Honzō" (Materia Medica for Famine Relief), there is a tree called "kaikai-su," which might be the haji tree.
From "Wamyō Ruijūshō" (Japanese Names for Things):
Yellow haji (Hanshi) - According to the annotations in "Wenxuan," haji (pronounced like rakko, Japanese name hanishi) refers to today's yellow haji tree.
Yellow haji is used for dyeing yellow, and the emperor's robe is called "ōrozen" (yellow haji dye).
