右之さんあわぬせうこ是にあり
▲あるひは金七匁四分八りあるを判金のさうは
銀五百目がへの時五百目を四十四匁てわれは

▲あるいは金7匁4分8厘があるとき、判金の相場が銀500目換えの場合、500目を44匁で割ると、金1匁につき銀11匁3分6厘3毛6糸3忽ずつに当たります。これに右の金7匁4分8厘をかけると、銀84匁9分9厘9毛9糸5忽になります。このように手間をかけて計算が合わず、悪い算法である。

まず金7匁4分8厘を右（前）に置き、これに相場の500目をかけると3740（三十四＝3740）になります。これを44匁で割ると85匁と求まります。これが良い算法です。この考え方は万事に応用できます。

金17匁6分なりという。
まず銀200目を右（前）に置き、これに44匁をかけると8800（八八＝8800）になります。これを相場の500目で割ると、金17匁6分と求まります。

Here is the proof that this calculation does not work out correctly.
▲ Suppose one has 7 monme 4 bu 8 rin of gold, and the exchange rate for *hankin* (判金, oval gold coins) is 500 silver *me* per coin. Dividing 500 *me* by 44 monme gives a rate of 11 monme 3 bu 6 rin 3 mo 6 shi 3 kotsu of silver per monme of gold. Multiplying this rate by the 7 monme 4 bu 8 rin of gold yields 84 monme 9 bu 9 rin 9 mo 9 shi 5 kotsu of silver. Calculated in this laborious manner, the answer does not come out cleanly — this is an inferior method of calculation.
▲ Here is a better method of division for the above.
When asking how much silver one gets for 7 monme 4 bu 8 rin of gold, given that the exchange rate for *hankin* is 500 *me* of silver per coin:

The answer is 85 monme.
First, set down the 7 monme 4 bu 8 rin of gold, and multiply it by the exchange rate of 500 *me*, which gives 3,740. Divide this by 44 monme, and the answer of 85 monme is obtained. This is the correct method of calculation. This approach is useful in all manner of problems.
▲ When one has 200 *me* of silver, and the exchange rate for *hankin* is 500 *me* of silver per coin, and one asks how much gold this silver is worth:
The answer is 17 monme 6 bu of gold.
First, set down the 200 *me* of silver, and multiply it by 44 monme, which gives 8,800. Divide this by the exchange rate of 500 *me*, and the answer of 17 monme 6 bu of gold is obtained.
