[Upper Volume, Second Folio, Verso]
Furthermore, in raising armies and levying taxes, in surveying land and increasing the number of foot soldiers — all these things are well guided and managed through arithmetic. How wondrous it is! The height of a distant mountain can be known here without going there; the depth of the ocean's abyss can be known without descending to its bottom. How much more so, then, with the principles of Heaven (*tenri*)? The movements of the sun and moon, the turning of the four seasons, the circulation of vital energies (*unki*), and beyond these — diviners, physicians, and all manner of craftsmen and artisans — all seek to determine good and ill fortune through arithmetic, and to understand whether the flow of vital energy is in harmony or in discord. Without relying upon this Way,

how could one come to know its subtleties and comprehend its principles? And yet, to truly know its depths and grasp its finer details, one cannot attain this without the utmost effort and dedication. Therefore, I have set down its essential principles with the intention of providing a single point of entry into the gates of learning (*seimon*). However, being of limited talent and clumsy in my efforts, there may be places that are insufficient, or passages that are repetitive and burdensome. Should someone of genuine clarity and understanding correct any errors or omissions, it would truly be of great assistance.
