**Volume 2, Folio 11 Verso** *Problem 39: The Crow Calculation (Karasu-zan)* 999 crows cry out at 999 locations, with each crow calling 999 times. What is the total number of cries? [The total is 997,002,999 cries.] The method: Multiply 999 crows by 999 locations, which gives 998,001. Then multiply this again by 999 cries. [This yields 997,002,999.] Likewise, 99 crows cry at 99 locations, each calling 99 times. What is the total number of cries? [The total is 970,299 cries. The method is the same as above.] **Volume 2, Folio 12 Recto** *Problem 40: Estimating the volume of 1,000 gold coins and 1,000 silver coins using the cube root method* [Figure showing: Gold 1,000 coins — 6 sun, 3 bu, 1 rin, 1 mō, 5; Silver 1,000 coins — 6 sun, 7 bu, 4 rin, 7 mō] ○ The method: The weight of 1,000 gold coins is 44 kan. Dividing this by 175 monme gives the number of tsubo (cubic sun) as 251 tsubo, 4 bu, 2 rin, 8 mō, 5 shi, 7 kotsu, 1 [unit]. Applying the cube root method to this gives 6 sun, 3 bu, 1 rin, 1 mō, 5 shi. This is the length of one side of the cube. ○ The method: The weight of 1,000 silver coins is 43 kan. Dividing this by 140 monme gives the number of tsubo (cubic sun) as 307 tsubo, 1 bu, 4 rin, 2 mō, 8 shi, 5 kotsu, 7 [unit]. Applying the cube root method to this gives 6 sun, 7 bu, 4 rin, 7 mō. This is the length of one side of the cube.
