[From the section on powder magazines in the "Kenrin Hikkei" (Essential Compendium of the Kenrin): It states: "In the vicinity, one must erect a lightning-avoidance pillar (lightning rod) to ward off heavenly fire (lightning strikes). The method is as follows: use a square iron pillar ranging in length from one jō six shaku five sun (approximately 5 meters) to three jō three shaku (approximately 10 meters), sharpen its tip to a point, plate it with copper, and attach a lead strip of three sun nine bu six in thickness. Erect this on top of a building or along the edge of a wall. Attach a chain at a point three shaku three sun (approximately 1 meter) from the base, and draw it down to connect it into moist ground. For tall storehouses, the pointed tip should be made longer, doubled in length," and so forth. --- [Illustration of an earthquake- and lightning-resistant building designed for rapid evacuation] As shown in the illustration, one should dig into the four corners and connect chains down into wells placed there. As for the method of construction, skilled master carpenters will have various ingenious techniques. For a simpler approach, one should devise a method based on the rope-knotting techniques described in the Western work "Unten Zensho" (Complete Book of Operations/Rigging). ◦ How to construct the central pillar: From this point onward, the pillar is to be wrapped in copper (red metal) and buried in the ground. The pillar itself is to be made from a round log. The base of the central pillar should be set and buried into stone, as shown in the illustration. ◦ A further explanation of this illustration will be provided on the following page. The roof should be made of straw, miscanthus (kaya) thatch, or thin wooden shingles (kokera), or alternatively covered with copper sheeting.
