かよひ火坑（くわこう）の形状（かたち）はたとへは埋（うづ）み火の如く自然（しぜん）に地

……（火坑の火脈は）遠く異国にまで通じており、火坑の形状はたとえるならば埋み火（うずみび）のようなものであり、自然に地気を蒸し上げて、万物はこれによって生育する。このゆえに、まず地震がはじめて発生する時には、煙気（えんき）が地上に蒸し上がり、しばらくのうちに空中を覆い、星の光が失われることをもって前兆（しるし）とする。その様子をまのあたりに見聞きし、常にその形（さま）を目にすることができる場所としては、信州・肥州・薩州・日州・豆州などの山々があり、その他にもなお多い。

...[The fire veins] extend far into foreign lands. The form of these fire pits is akin to banked embers (*uzumibi*), naturally steaming up the earth's vital energy (*chiki*), by which all living things are nourished and grow. For this reason, when an earthquake first occurs, smoky vapors (*enki*) rise up from the ground and, within a short time, cover the sky, causing the stars to lose their light—this is taken as a sign [of an impending earthquake]. Places where one may directly witness and regularly observe such phenomena include the mountains of Shinshū [Nagano], Hishū [Higo/Kumamoto], Sasshū [Satsuma/Kagoshima], Nisshū [Hyūga/Miyazaki], Zushū [Izu/Shizuoka], and many other locations besides.
Regions where fire veins do not circulate are found frequently in the southeastern lands of Russia and in the northern parts of America. These lands are barren and desolate, where not even grasses and trees grow. By contrast, regions through which fire energy circulates are especially fertile, and all things there thrive abundantly. How wondrous indeed are the workings of the Creator (*zōmotsushā*)! Yet those things that bring such vast and great benefit also produce harm of an equally extreme magnitude.
