[A Brief Account of Earthquakes (continued)] ...The fire pits are pressed throughout the entire earth and are ordinarily completely still; yet, should even the slightest passage of air occur, the flame-energy (*enki*) is thereby set in motion and causes the earth to tremble. In severe cases, even mountains are shaken and collapse, sand and stones are thrown up, dwellings are destroyed, great numbers of people suffer harm, and mountains, rivers, hills, and valleys are altogether changed in their positions. A distant example is found in a city of Italy, which was buried underground, with its people, vegetation, and livestock utterly annihilated. The earthquakes and tsunamis that have occurred in recent times in our own country—in Echigo, Shinano, the Kinai region, Kii, Ise, Iga, Izu, Suruga, and other places—are precisely of this same nature. Because fire veins branch out from a single course into many, regions adjoining neighboring provinces tend to suffer greater damage. This depends on whether a given location falls within the path of the fire energy or not. The reason that shrines and temples suffer comparatively little damage is that the spacing of their foundation stones and the height of their ridge beams differ from those of ordinary residential construction. Tsunamis (*kōrō*) also arise when fire energy erupts at the bottom of the sea, causing the ocean tides to...
