(Tenmei 3rd year [1783], continued from previous page) There were many fires, and in Kyoto and the Gokinin region, the cold was intense and evening showers fell continuously every day.
From around the 3rd and 4th days of the 7th month of the same year, great earthquakes struck Shinshū and neighboring provinces day and night, with a roaring sound like thunder, and sand and stones began to rain down. On the 5th and 6th days, the rumbling grew increasingly intense, becoming especially severe at night. On the 7th day, it became as dark as the dead of night in broad daylight, rocks were hurled through the air, and hot ash rained down upon the surrounding areas. Mount Asama erupted, and Mount Kusatsu and other peaks burst into flame simultaneously. Fierce fire scattered in all directions, and the mountain fields at the foot of the mountains were instantly transformed into great rivers, with boiling hot water gushing forth like waterfalls. This flowed out into the Tone River, and nearby villages were swept away and destroyed.
In the 4th year of Kansei (1792), a mountain in the Shimabara domain of Hizen Province erupted, with hot water welling up and flowing down, causing many deaths. The entire province shook with tremors, and the light of the fire illuminated the surrounding provinces.
In the 6th year of Kansei (1794), on the 3rd day of the 11th month, at the Hour of the Rat (around midnight), there was a great earthquake in Edo.
