現代語訳
同九年（文政九年）、春と秋に江戸で地震が数度発生した。
同十一年（文政十一年）十一月十二日、越後国長岡付近で大地震が起きた。
【越後国三条からの返書の写し】
お見舞いのお手紙を確かに受け取りました。早速お返事を差し上げるべきところ、延引いたしまして、追々と寒さが増してまいりましたが、そちらでは特段のご異変もないとのこと、何よりでございます。
さて、このたびの当所の大地震に際してお気遣いいただき、カツオ一箱をお恵みいただきましたこと、誠に深切（ご親切）に存じ、ありがたく頂戴いたしました。
霜月（十一月）十二日の朝、五つ時（午前八時頃）より夥しく揺れ動き、大地震が起きました。夢中になって家中、表裏より這い出し、居宅・土蔵は微塵に崩れてしまいました。さらに近辺より出火し、一時に煙と化してしまいました。背骨・肩・腰・頭などを打たれた人々の中には、目・鼻・口から血を吐きながら逃れ出ようと、狂気のように苦しみ、ついには手負い（負傷者）・死人が……

In the 9th year of the same era (Bunsei 9, 1826), earthquakes struck Edo several times in both spring and autumn.
On the 12th day of the 11th month of the 11th year (Bunsei 11, 1828), a great earthquake struck the area around Nagaoka in Echigo Province.

I have duly received your letter of inquiry. Though I should have responded immediately, I delayed my reply, and the weather has grown increasingly cold. I trust that all is well on your end.
Regarding the great earthquake that struck our area, I am most grateful and deeply touched by your kind concern and the gift of a box of bonito (skipjack tuna) you so generously sent to us.
On the morning of the 12th day of the 11th month (November), beginning around the hour of Five (approximately 8 o'clock in the morning), the ground shook with tremendous violence. In a daze, we scrambled out of the house from both the front and back. Our residence and storehouse were reduced to rubble. Furthermore, fires broke out in the surrounding area, and everything was reduced to smoke in an instant. Among those who had been struck on the spine, shoulders, hips, and head, some staggered out while vomiting blood from their eyes, nose, and mouths, suffering as though driven mad, until finally, the wounded and the dead...
