同九年（1826年）春秋、江戸で地震が数度起きた。
同十一年（1828年）十一月十二日、越後国長岡あたりで大地震が起きた。

お見舞いのお手紙、確かに受け取りました。すぐにでもご返事を差し上げるべきところ、延引いたしました。仰せの通り、日増しに寒くなる折ではございますが、そちらはご無事とのこと。さて、このたびの当所の大地震についてお見舞いとしてカツオ一箱をご恵贈いただき、ご親切の段、誠にありがたく存じます。さて、霜月（十一月）十二日の朝五ツ時（午前八時）頃から、おびただしく震動しはじめ、大地震が揺れ出し、夢中のうちに家内が表裏から這い出したところ、居宅・土蔵はことごとく微塵に崩れ、さらに近辺より出火して、一時に煙となってしまいました。背骨・肩・腰・頭などを打たれた人々の中には、目・鼻・口から血を吐きながら逃げ出そうと、狂気のように苦しみ果て、負傷者・死者は…（続く）

In the spring and autumn of the ninth year [of Bunsei, 1826 CE], Edo was struck by earthquakes on several occasions.
On the twelfth day of the eleventh month of the eleventh year [of Bunsei, 1828 CE], a great earthquake struck the area around Nagaoka in Echigo Province.
A copy of a letter of reply from Sanjo in Echigo Province:
Your letter of inquiry has arrived safely. I should have replied to you immediately, but regrettably this has been delayed. As you noted, the cold is gradually deepening, yet I trust you are well on your end. Now, regarding the great earthquake that struck our area, I am most grateful for your kind gift of a box of bonito sent as an expression of your concern. Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated. On the morning of the twelfth day of the eleventh month, from around the Hour of the Fifth Bell [approximately 8 o'clock in the morning], a tremendous shaking began, and a great earthquake struck. In a daze, all members of the household crawled out from both the front and back of the house, whereupon our residence and storehouse were reduced entirely to rubble. Furthermore, fire broke out in the vicinity and everything was reduced to smoke in an instant. Among those who had been struck on the spine, shoulders, hips, and head, some were vomiting blood from their eyes, noses, and mouths, writhing in agony as if gone mad in their desperate attempts to flee.
