On the 2nd day of the 7th month of Tenpō 1 (with the era name changed in the 12th month), a great earthquake struck Kyoto, causing damage to the Imperial Palace, Nijō Castle, shrines, temples, and other structures. The tremors continued dozens of times, day and night, until the 20th day of the 8th month.
On the 8th day of the 4th month of the same era's 5th year [Tenpō 5], Mount Fuji erupted and earthquakes occurred in the surrounding provinces.
On the 26th day of the 6th month of the same era's 6th year [Tenpō 6], a great earthquake struck the domain of Sendai, causing major damage to castle ramparts and other structures; along the coast, a great tsunami caused several hundred private homes to be swept away, with an uncountable number of deaths.
On the 24th day of the 3rd month of Kōka 3, a great earthquake struck Shinshū [Shinano Province], destroying, toppling, and crushing homes; fires broke out in many places, and the number of humans and horses killed was beyond counting.
