同前知之弁 潮田先生編
天地の気その序を失ひ、伏陽出ることあたはずして、
蒸発する時は地震に、これ陽その所を失ひ、陰に填
るゝにておそるべしといへり、夫迅雷風烈かならず変
ずとは、聖人天の怒りを敬み給ふなり、地震といへ
ども此心得あるべし、今茲の地震こそまことに未

天地の気がその秩序を失い、地中に伏している陽気が出ることができず、
蒸発しようとするとき、地震が起こる。これは陽気がその正しい場所を失い、
陰気に塞がれているためであり、恐るべきことであると言われている。
そもそも、迅雷・烈風には必ず（心を）改めよというのは、
聖人が天の怒りを畏み敬われたからである。地震についても
同様の心がけがあるべきだ。今年の地震こそ、まことに未（曾有の…）

When the qi (vital energy) of Heaven and Earth loses its proper order, and the yang energy hidden within the earth cannot emerge and instead builds up as vapor, an earthquake occurs. This is said to be a fearful phenomenon, caused by the yang energy losing its proper place and being blocked by yin energy.
It is said that one must always change one's conduct in response to thunder and violent winds — this reflects how the sages revered and held in awe the anger of Heaven.
