曾有の大変にて、世人慎むべきの時なれ、かゝれば
工商おの〳〵倹素を専に言行をつゝしみて可なら
ん、世上紛々の説あり、よつて今地震の弁説を詳
にし、且往古より記載に見ゆる年月を考へしるして、
後鑑に備ふと言、安政二年十月日北峰閑人識
それ地の震ひし事はかみつ世より
あめつちのわざをぎにして今の代までた年
幾千たびといへる数をしらずそが中にさも
あら〳〵しく震ひて人のなやみともなりしこと
かつはふるへるさまの考をも書記し梓に
ちりばめ後の世のしるべともなさんよし
現代語訳
曾有の大変事であり、世の人々が慎むべき時である。それゆえ、
職人・商人はそれぞれ倹約・質素を第一とし、言葉と行いを慎むのが良いであろう。
世間には様々な説が入り乱れている。そこで、今ここに地震についての解説を詳しくまとめ、
かつ遠い昔から記録に見られる年月を考証・記録して、
後世の教訓・手本に備えるものとする。
安政二年十月某日 北峰閑人 記す
そもそも地が震えることは、上つ世（太古の昔）より
天地の業（わざ）として今の世に至るまで、
幾千度とも知れぬほどの数があった。その中でも
特に激しく震えて人々の苦しみをもたらしたこと、
また震えた様子の考証をも書き記し、版木に刻んで
後の世の道しるべともなそうと思う次第である。

There are many conflicting theories circulating in society. For this reason, I have here compiled a detailed explanation of earthquakes, and have also researched and recorded the dates found in historical documents since ancient times, so as to serve as a guide and reference for future generations.

From ancient times, the trembling of the earth has been
a work of Heaven and Earth, and from those primordial ages up to the present day,
it has occurred a countless number of times — so many thousands of times that the number cannot be known. Among these,
the events that shook the earth with particular violence and brought suffering to the people,
as well as an examination of the manner of these tremors, I shall set down in writing, engrave upon woodblocks,
and offer as a guide for generations to come.
