のものは随分発明の人も物に深く驚（おどろ）く故狐狸の類ひ異
形を見すかはそら目なる事をさとらず又は蛇等に呑（のま）るゝとも
臆（おく）病にして五体すくみ気｜絶（ぜつ）故死人の如くならん血（けつ）気
充満して勇（ゆう）気さかんなる時は萬物の長たる人間たとへ
一度呑（のま）るゝとも蹴破（けやぶ）り踏（ふみ）やぶり出るに何の子細かあらん
臆病（おくひよう）甚しけれは震雷は勿論急火非常の時しも仰天
して即智（そくち）出ず宝物｜重器（ぢうき）を差置無益の品を取出し
順逆（じゅんぎやく）するも皆心魂を飛す故也物毎一理をさとりあきら
むる時は一度は不意に驚（おどろく）とも心の定り早く夫大勇は物に
動（どう）せず進（すゝ）むべきにすゝみ退くべきにしりそく大事に
駭（おとろ）かずして少事に驚く此度の地震にも覚悟（かくご）よきものは
時にのぞみてあはて驚かず同し逃走（にけはし）るにも其｜方位（ほうい）をた
がへすいよ〳〵｜宅舎（いえ）壊倒（くづれたを）るゝにおよぶとも血気くるはざれは頓智（とんち）の
はたらき出て棟梁（むねはり）をよけ手薄の所を見さだめ切りぬけ
たる有又は堀（ほり）出さるゝまても物を楯（たて）にとりひそみ居て
一命全きもの数多（あまた）あれとも外にてうろたへ棟宇に
圧（おさ）れたるに蘇生（そせい）したるものなし逃げんとすると切抜んと
覚悟せしは其働（はたらき）格別（かくへつ）ならん脱（のが）れ出べき道筋長屋

現代語訳

胆の臓が薄弱に生まれついた者は、たとえ発明の才能がある人でも物事に深く驚くため、狐狸の類いの異形を見破ることができず、それが見間違いであることを理解できない。また蛇などに呑まれても、臆病で五体がすくみ気絶するため死人のようになってしまう。血気が充満して勇気が盛んな時は、万物の長たる人間は、たとえ一度呑まれても蹴破り踏み破って出るのに何の困難があろうか。

臆病が甚だしければ、雷は勿論、火災や非常時にも仰天して即座に知恵が働かず、宝物や重要な器物を置いたまま無益な品を取り出し、順序が逆になるのも皆心魂を失うためである。物事すべての一理を悟り諦める時は、一度は不意に驚いても心の落ち着きは早い。それ故大勇は物事に動じず、進むべき時に進み、退くべき時に退き、大事に驚かず小事に驚く。

今度の地震にも覚悟の良い者は、その時に臨んで慌て驚かず、同じく逃げ走るにもその方位を間違えない。いよいよ家屋が倒壊するに及んでも血気が乱れなければ、機転が働いて棟梁を避け、薄弱な所を見定めて切り抜けた者がいる。また掘り出されるまでも物を盾にとって身を潜めて一命を全うした者は数多くあるが、外で狼狽して建物に押し潰された者で蘇生した者はいない。逃げようとするか切り抜けようかと覚悟を決めた者は、その働きが格別であろう。逃れ出るべき道筋、長屋

Those who are born with weak gallbladder organs, even if they are people of inventive talent, are deeply startled by things, so they cannot see through the strange forms of foxes, raccoon dogs and the like, and cannot understand that these are mere illusions. Even when swallowed by snakes and such, being cowardly, their whole body becomes rigid and they faint, becoming like dead people. When one's blood energy is abundant and courage is vigorous, humans, being the leaders of all things, even if swallowed once, can kick through and trample their way out - what difficulty could there be?

When cowardice is extreme, not only with thunder but also during fires and emergencies, one becomes so startled that immediate wisdom fails to work, leaving behind treasures and important vessels while taking out useless items, with everything in reverse order - all because one loses their spirit. When one understands and accepts the principle of all things, even if startled unexpectedly once, the mind settles quickly. Therefore, great courage is not moved by things - advancing when one should advance, retreating when one should retreat, not being startled by great matters while being surprised by small ones.

Even in this recent earthquake, those with good mental preparation did not panic or become startled when the moment came, and even when fleeing, they did not mistake their direction. Even when houses finally collapsed, if their blood energy did not become disordered, quick wit would work, allowing them to avoid beams, determine weak spots, and cut through to escape. There were many who took shelter using objects as shields until they were dug out, preserving their lives completely. However, none who panicked outside and were crushed by buildings ever revived.
