【Right page】 And so he returned to his home province. From the winter of Bunji 5 (1189) to the autumn of Tenshō 18 (1590), for over four hundred years, the domain was administered and the family line continued. However, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi conducted his campaign against the Hōjō of Odawara in Sagami Province, Sanboku was afflicted with a serious illness and could not depart for battle. Therefore, he sent his chief retainer as his deputy. When the battle ended, because Lord Sanboku had not participated, he was exiled to the western provinces. His remaining lands were given entirely to his chief retainer. Thus the retainer administered Senboku and Akita, and around Keichō 7 (1602), the domain was transferred to Mutsu Province. It is said that the one called Akita Jōnosuke was a descendant of Lord Sanboku's chief retainer. Also, Hitachibo Kaison 【Left page】 was still alive in the Senboku domain. However, it was said that he had grown senile and could no longer speak of the old days. It is also said that Hitachibo died in Kan'ei 7 (1630). He always kept a small box wrapped in bamboo bark and wore it around his neck day and night, never letting it leave his person. After his death, when this was opened and examined, it was found to be in Lord Yoshitsune's own hand, bearing his seal, and addressed "To Hitachibo," and so upon seeing this, everyone came to know that he was indeed Hitachibo. And so the story goes. This tale of Seikatsu concerns the period around the Battle of the Koromo River in Isawa District, Mutsu Province, when all who had served Lord Hangan Yoshitsune perished in battle; after which only four survived: Seikatsu (Koshirō / Kiyoemi), Hitachibo, and two other close attendants —
