【Right page】 When Jirō came forth and spoke harshly, the messenger was displeased. When he reported these words to his lord exactly as they had been spoken, Shibata Shirō was dispatched again as a messenger. This Shibata went to Yamakita (marginal note: In the war chronicles this person appears as Yuri no Jirō; which account is correct is uncertain) and said: "Our lord's command is this: having opposed Yoritomo, why do you not raise your army as you wish? Is it because you are afraid?" To this Yamakita replied: "I am not afraid. Consider what happened to Lord Kotō (Minamoto no Yoshitomo), the Master of the Left Stables — he was defeated by the Taira forces over three days and three nights at the Battle of Taiken Gate, fled to the lodgings of Osada at Utsumi in Noma, Owari Province, and was struck down. How did that come to pass? In all likelihood, the followers of Hidehira of Mutsu, 【Left page】 though few in number, took on all the military forces of Japan and fought well for thirty days." Speaking without any sign of fear, when Shibata reported this to his lord, the Great General heard it and said: "This Yamakita speaks thus without fearing for his life — what an admirable warrior! Release his bonds!" He had them untied, and praising him as a courageous man, restored his landholdings as they had been before. This was indeed a most gracious thing. Yamakita Jirō was greatly overjoyed, saying "Not only has my life been spared, but how gracious and how humbling — my landholdings are restored without loss!" — wetting the sleeves of his armor with tears, and returned to his home province.
