【Folio 6】 【Right page】 to a place in Senpuku where he had connections, and went down to find them. Upon his arrival, he looked for that house, but its inhabitants had fled and no one was there. Feeling astonished and troubled, he asked the people around, but since they had concealed their whereabouts from the start, no one knew of them. Then, looking near a checkpoint (seki), he found a poem written on a pillar in his wife's hand: If you long for me, come and ask—Kōkan-bō— I am in Senpuku, at the home of Tōshirō Seeing this, he felt a piteous and helpless emotion. Although it was not something meant for him to see, following the impulse of his heart, he thought to write a reply and wrote: If you had but said so before you left, what a wretched thing— The wife of Fujitsui, at Tōshirō's in Senpuku— 【Left page】 had I but known where to find her." His feelings were understandable. The poems are truly charming. Had this been the age of the Man'yōshū, they should have been included in the anthology, as it appears in the text. This passage mistakenly took Senpuku in Dewa Province for Senpuku in Mutsu Province. While on the subject, let me add: in Mutsu Province, the deity Komagata no Kami is enshrined, and also Komagatane no Kami is enshrined. Both are deities listed in the Engishiki, and the sacred peak where these deities reside is called "Komarutake" or "Komaritake," and all people hold it in reverence. In the same province, in Isawa District near the Kami River, there is also a Komagata Mountain. There, however, there is no sign of divine presence. In former times, Lord Hidehira planted a thousand cherry trees there, and the sight of those mountain cherry blossoms scattering is what the heart of the flowers—
