加藤（かとう）次郎 景廉（かけかと）は頼朝（よりとも）の御かんきをかうふり此 度（たひ）もやうしにもれけれ
とも心（むな）さわぎしければ何事か有やらんと紫威（むらさきおどし）のはら巻太刀を帯
佐殿（すけどの）へはせ参る頼朝（よりとも）は小具足（こぐそく）に小長刀（こなぎなた）つきゑんにつゝ立（たち）給しが
かげかとを見て仰（おゝせ）には今夜（こんや）いづみの判官（はんぐわん）を討（うた）んと北条（ほうでう）佐々木（ささき）を
つかはしぬ打（うち）かちたらば館（たち）に火（ひ）をかくべしと云つるがいまだけふり

加藤次郎景廉は頼朝の御感気を受けていたが、この度も用事に漏れてしまった
けれども心騒ぎがしたので何事かあるのだろうかと紫威の腹巻と太刀を帯び
佐殿へ急いで参上した。頼朝は小具足に小長刀を突いて縁に立っておられたが
景廉を見て仰せになるには「今夜泉の判官を討とうと北条と佐々木を
遣わした。勝利したら館に火をかけると言ったが、いまだ煙も
見えず心もとない」とおっしゃった。景廉が承ると「夜討ちはそれがしこそ」
といって言葉を散らしかけ出るのを、景廉が「しばし」といって火威しの鎧と
白星の兜を着け「夜討ちには太刀より柄の長い物が良かろう」と
お渡しになる小長刀をそのまま賜った。景廉は急いで向かい北条に
対面した。時政が見て「御辺は御感動の身なり」と言えば、景廉は
「それゆえ急に召されて兼高が首を貫いて参らせよ」とこの長
刀を賜ったといって見せた。北条はさしも苦戦していた城中に事
なく攻め入り櫓に火をかけ、ついに兼高を討ち取ったということである。
その後土肥・土屋・岡崎三百余騎にて石橋山に籠り、また安房・上
総へ渡り千葉介が味方して、ついに平家を討ち滅ぼし給うた。

Yoritomo received an imperial edict and
persuaded Hōjō Tokimasa.

the deputy governor of Izu,
Judge Izumi
Kanetaka,
Hōjō agreed, saying
if victorious, they would raise fire signals,
and if at a disadvantage, they would
send a messenger,
and headed out.
However,
the situation looked favorable,
so Hōjō also attacked
but held back in reserve.

Katō Jirō Kagenori had received Yoritomo's favor, but this time he was left out of the mission. However, feeling uneasy in his heart about what might be happening, he donned his purple-threaded belly wrap and sword and hurried to see his lord. Yoritomo stood on the veranda in light armor holding a short naginata, and upon seeing Kagenori, he said: "Tonight I sent Hōjō and Sasaki to attack Judge Izumi. They said they would set fire to the mansion if victorious, but I still see no smoke and am anxious." When Kagenori heard this, he said "The night attack should be my responsibility!" and was about to rush off when Kagenori said "Wait a moment," put on fire-threatening armor and a white-starred helmet, and saying "For night attacks, something with a longer handle than a sword would be better," gave him the short naginata he was holding. Kagenori hurried off and met with Hōjō. When Tokimasa saw him, he said "You are one who has received his lordship's favor," and Kagenori replied "That is why I was suddenly summoned and given this long sword to pierce Kanetaka's head and bring it back," showing the weapon. Hōjō, who had been struggling greatly, was able to attack the fortified residence without incident, set fire to the watchtower, and finally killed Kanetaka. Afterwards, with Doi, Tsuchiya, and Okazaki and over three hundred mounted warriors, they holed up at Ishibashiyama, then crossed to Awa and Kazusa, gained Chiba no suke as an ally, and finally destroyed the Heike clan.
