源頼義が奥州で安倍貞任・
高宗任と九年間の
戦いをし、源氏が
ついに勝利を
収めた。兄の貞任は
戦場で
討ち死にし、
弟の
宗任は
生け捕られた。
都への帰還の後、
頼義の館に
いた時、若い
殿上人が東国の
蛮族をからかって

遊ぼうと
盛りの
梅の花
一枝を手折り、
「これはどの
ような花か」と
言った
言葉に対して
「東国にて
梅の
花とは
見ていたが
都の人はどのように
言うのだろうか」
この歌に興が冷めて
しらけと
なった

【Heading】Kō no Munetō - The Virtue of Waka Poetry
Minamoto no Yoriyoshi fought against
Abe no Sadatō and
Kō no Munetō in Ōshū for nine years,
and the Genji clan
finally achieved
victory.
The elder brother Sadatō
died in battle
on the battlefield,
while the younger brother
Munetō was
taken prisoner.
After returning to the capital,
while at Yoriyoshi's mansion,
a young
courtier, intending to mock
the eastern barbarian,

as a jest,
plucked a branch
of plum blossoms
in full bloom
and asked,
"What kind of
flower is this?"
In response to these
words, he replied:
"In the eastern lands
I saw this as
plum
blossoms,
but what do
the people of the capital
call it?"
This poem made the mood turn cold
and awkward.
